Do you struggle with issues such as anger, anxiety, depression, self esteem, self harm, or relationship issues? Are you feeling stuck in your life and find it difficult to take a step forward? Have you experienced trauma such as bullying, sexual abuse, domestic violence, or bereavement, and would like to see how this may be impacting on your life and relationships today? Maybe you tried talking therapies before but seem to be getting nowhere. Creative counselling has the potential to heal you on a much deeper level, leading to long lasting change. Feelings can be accessed, and healed through the power of metaphor and symbols.

Hi, I’m Anne. I’m an Integrative Counsellor with over 25 years’ experience supporting people in wellbeing and development roles across higher education and the NHS. Everyone’s situation is unique, and no list can ever capture all the reasons someone might come to counselling. The areas below reflect some of the experiences I often support people with. You don’t need to fit neatly into them. If you’re feeling stuck, weighed down, or unsure, we can explore things together and find a way forward that feels right for you.

Art therapy offers a unique space to explore your thoughts and emotions through creativity — no artistic skill needed. I believe that everyone can benefit from art therapy. Whether you're comfortable with art or haven’t picked up a pencil in years, the focus is on expression, not the end result. I offer a calm, supportive environment where you can feel free to explore at your own pace.

Whether you're are feeling stuck in life, experiencing anxiety or depression or perhaps struggling with relationship issues that can't be resolved, the good news is that these are common issues that counselling can help with. I use the three main proven approaches used within counselling - psychodynamic, person-centred (sometimes referred to as humanistic) and cognitive-behavioural as well as EMDR therapy to treat trauma. This gives you more choice and, in turn, creates the flexibility to move towards your personal goals.

I believe every individual has deep inherent dignity and that people are worth caring for. Yet we live in a world where we will suffer, some of us in deep and profound ways. I meet with many clients who have complex trauma or are working through challenges related to family or church hurt. They all desire to experience life differently, to heal and be renewed. Many of my clients also desire to work with a counsellor who has a Christian perspective and can offer insights on difficulties with Christian community.

If you have landed on this page I believe an important part of you knows that you are suffering and need support. I seek to offer you a safe, confidential space where you can share your story. Whilst I have worked with a number of difficulties, these tend to have a common, but individually unique grounding - how we as humans have learnt to survive and cope in difficult circumstances, and together in therapy we can start to make sense of how your experiences and relationships have shaped you in order to develop a road map for repairing relationships, overcoming difficulties, being kinder to yourself and developing new ways of coping in order to live a better and more fulfilling life.

Attachment-based Counsellors

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioural Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
