I have experience in counselling for stress, depression, anxiety , family issues, bereavement, domestic violence, trauma, self harm and sexual abuse.
About me: There are times when we all need someone to listen and work alongside us for an issue that has become complex for us alone. I want to offer you time to be heard and explore issues that you are currently experiencing. It is important to me that we can collaborate and work together to develop a way with you of moving ahead. I think the relationship between counsellor and client is fundamental. I am happy to offer a free twenty minute session for assessment and to see if we are both happy to work together.

The difficulties you have been experiencing recently or maybe ongoing for a while, may be related to anxiety , depression or trauma. You may have lost your connection with yourself and be feeling unsure about your capabilities in some aspect of your life. The global pandemic may have added further anxieties into your life making coping more difficult.

My experience is of working with clients with a wide range of issues EG; depression, anxiety , anger, family and relationship issues, etc.
Hi my work with children and young people has enabled me to adopt a common sense approach. I practise Integrative Counselling, that means I used CBT, Person Centred, Pyschodynamic, etc, concepts. Which are the building blocks of thoughts and beliefs which affect how we feel. I understand the first step in seeking counselling is hard, if you have sought support, you may not know how to effect change it’s at this point we explore choices.

Hello, I am a Consultant Clinical Psychologist, CAT Therapist and Coach. I am passionate about working with people in the way that they find most helpful. We can all find ourselves at a point in our lives when things are not how we’d like them to be. We can be caught up in negative patterns, experience difficult symptoms (such as struggling with sleep or anxiety , feeling low or stressed) and have difficulties with our relationships, work or our health. We may have experienced something traumatic or stressful that we struggle to cope with or find ourselves caught up in a negative situation that we don’t seem to be able to escape.

Clients coming to see me have usually lost confidence in themselves-some have never had it. They want to feel more positive about their current situation and have a hopeful outlook for the future. Low mood and anxiety can arise for many reasons-sometimes we need to go back into earlier experiences to find out the cause. For others there has been a significant loss-of employment-or the death of a person close to them. All these things trigger a sense of insecurity and struggling to manage we can develop unhelpful behaviours -maybe we drink or eat too much or hurt ourselves in other ways. Counselling helps us find healthier options

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
