Psychodynamic Counselling in Selsey

My experience is in working with both adults and adolescents aged 15-18, using the psychodynamic model as a foundation, although I may draw upon other models for the most helpful solution.
Are you struggling with issues and can't see which way to turn? Feeling overwhelmed? Facing life-changing situations? I am a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, working in private practice providing face-to-face, telephone and online individual counselling. Counselling provides a safe and confidential space into which you can bring issues which may be leaving you struggling, anxious and conflicted. Talking to someone outside your immediate circle, who can offer an objective perspective on your situation, can help you to feel heard, recognise patterns of behaviour, and work things through without fear of reprisal, judgement or guilt.

The basis for the treatment I deliver to my clients is psychodynamic psychotherapy, but I also bring in intensive short term dynamic psychotherapy techniques which help to direct our work to the areas where you will notice the biggest changes - targeting anxiety and defence mechanisms which are causing you problems, and suggesting alternative, healthier strategies which will make a difference.
Are you feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure why certain patterns keep repeating in your life? I can offer a space to reflect, make sense of your thoughts and feelings, and explore how past experiences may be shaping your present relationships, behaviours, and ways of coping. Together, we can begin to understand the unconscious dynamics that may be causing distress or holding you back.
I work with young people and adults, and have particular experience with neurodiversity, physical disability, and LGBTQ+ identities.

My approach draws on humanistic, cognitive-behavioural and psychodynamic models of therapy to help gain an understanding of your lived experience and how you make sense of it.
I believe we are all different and what is beneficial to us changes as we encounter challenges throughout life. You may suffer from emotional problems including anxiety and depression, low self worth or relationship issues, struggle with bereavement or a life transition, eating disorders, panic, anger or traumatic experiences. Your goals may include alleviating symptoms of your distress, increasing self-awareness, better coping skills, exploring past experiences or developing emotional resilience. Whatever challenge brings you to therapy, you would like things to be different going forward.

Thanks for looking at my profile. I work with a broad range of clients, and understand that no two clients are the same. I tailor and specialise my clinical work to meet the specific needs and goals of each individual. I'm interested in the subconscious, how we may adopt coping strategies in order to avoid pain, and how this in turn may exacerbate pain further. I'm also interested in how addictive behaviours may develop, and how I can pick apart addictive processes and help to modify them into more constructive strategies. I have specific interest in chronic pain/conditions, and have a variety of strategies to help in this area.

I work mostly by using the integrated approach, which is drawing on the Person-Centred Therapy, Psychodynamic and CBT models.
Life gives us challenges at times no matter who we are. We are better equipped to deal with these challenges when we have the right support in place. This is where counselling can play a big part in supporting you to deal with whatever challenges you might be facing. Studies have shown that traumatic childhood events can present in our lives when we reach adulthood leaving us in a state of confusion. No matter what your challenges are or where they have come from counselling is there to help you deal with them in a safe and neutral place. I can offer online counselling, face to face, and a walk and talk service.

I am a registered member of the BACP, have a Diploma in Psychodynamic Counselling and a BA (Hons) degree in Developmental Psychology.
We can sometimes struggle with anxiety, relationships, and feel a sense of disconnection from life, not knowing our purpose, how others view us, and how to find meaning in our lives. Some of us struggle with boundaries, finding ourselves pleasing others: family, friends, or work. This can result in frustration, feeling powerless, and depressed. Talking to family and friends becomes a discussion, a sharing of information, a risk of being judged or told what to do. This is where therapy can help, by providing a safe, non-judgmental space to explore our feelings and give them validation, enabling us to grow strong.

I am a psychotherapeutic counsellor trained in the Psychodynamic model.
The Psychodynamic model works holistically, exploring and bringing awareness to both the root of a problem and the symptoms. Exploring the past allows for a less fearful present and a richer future.

Psychodynamic Counsellors
Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.
How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.
Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.
What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
