Does life ever feel completely overwhelming, as if navigating it is an impossible task? Finding someone who truly listens can seem daunting, especially when it’s hard to hear your thoughts whilst disconnected from your own voice, amid the noise of daily life, past experiences, and the heavy weight of expectation—whether your own or those of others. Self-discovery can often feel like untangling knots, especially when the journey feels like it’s not straightforward or easy, but, having a safe and supportive space for this process is invaluable.

It's Time For You! Are you always there for everyone else, and now need someone to be there for you? Then you have come to the right place! We all need help sometimes, and taking the first step of asking for help is often the hardest. I know, because I’ve been there too. You need time for yourself. How can you be there for others if you are feeling burnt-out? Have you suffered a loss or bereavement? Are you feeling low and anxious? Whatever difficulties you are facing, my job is not to diagnose you, give you advice, or tell you how to fix things. My job is to be by your side as we explore ways to help you find your own answers.

Although family, close friends and colleagues can offer valuable support, sometimes these very relationships can be barriers to exploring honestly and openly what you may be thinking or experiencing.
As an experienced person-centered BACP-registered counsellor, I place strong emphasis on getting to know and understand both you and your situation and to appreciate the issues which are negatively impacting your life. My considerable training and experience, in dealing with a wide range of issues, can begin to help in restoring your sense of well-being.

For nine years I was a University of Bath lecturer teaching addiction counselling, group psychotherapy and systemic family therapy, and continue to train practitioners.
You may wholeheartedly wish to cut down or stop drinking and/or using substances but find it harder to do than you imagined. Problematic drug and alcohol use causes unhappiness – to you and the people around you. I offer evidence-based therapy for alcohol, drug and gambling problems, including treatment aftercare, mentoring and relapse prevention guidance. Addiction therapy helps you understand substance use, strengthens your commitment to cut down or achieve abstinence, and addresses the thinking and behaviour that can sabotage recovery. I've also helped partners & relatives affected by another's addiction for more than 20 years.

I will use elements of other therapies, such as focused, somatic, inner child work, internal family systems, cognitive behaviour and art therapy.
Have you ever felt an unpleasant heaviness on your chest or tummy? A struggle to get the words out of your mouth that creates a lump in your throat that suffocates you. Have you ever felt like avoiding others for fear of getting hurt, or you may have felt disconnected and unheard? You want to show strength and courage instead, you feel afraid and helpless.

Before becoming a therapist, I spent over 25 years working with young people and families first as a Youth Worker, then as a Family Relationship Coach.
You might be feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or stuck, unsure of how to move forward but knowing something needs to change. Our work together will create a space for you to explore what led you to therapy, including the emotions and patterns that may be just beneath the surface. This can be a process of uncovering old wounds, understanding your inner world more deeply, and developing greater clarity and resilience. Whether you're navigating a difficult relationship, parenting challenges, or emotional burnout, therapy can offer a path toward healing and a more grounded sense of self.

Have you felt like you are from a different planet, compared to your family and friends?
Counselling can help. Taking the first step in asking for help is one of the hardest things a person must do. Having been a client myself I understand how difficult it is to explain what you are feeling inside your own head without feeling like you are being judged. Having to say these feelings out loud is even harder. I am here to support you.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
