The aim of sessions is to work towards an understanding of the challenges you face and the changes you wish to make. During sessions, you will be the focus of our attentions and I will value you without judgement, as a unique person, an equal. Having been in counselling myself, I have an understanding of the process. It can be a daunting prospect, and I will support you in that journey. I have listed many specialities and whilst I do have experience of working with them, I believe there is more to you than a "diagnosis" or an "issue" so the focus is on you the whole person, and whatever you choose to bring. NOTE - OVER 18'S ONLY

Counselling is an opportunity to be heard, to share with a trained person some of the difficulties that you encounter and to be supported to make positive changes to your life. I work in a respectful, empathic, understanding and compassionate way, providing a confidential, non-judgmental space to explore your thoughts, emotions and experiences. By reflecting on these experiences you can learn new ways of doing things and progress past what you feel is holding you back or causing you difficulty. I currently work from a comfortable and private space that is used solely for client sessions, online via video call or outdoors.

Are you coping on the outside while something inside feels unsettled, heavy, or hard to name? There may be a part of you that stays hidden while you keep going for everyone else. You might feel drained, restless, or quietly disconnected from yourself. In therapy, that unseen part is warmly welcome. We can slow down together, without pressure to explain or perform, allowing your experience to unfold safely. You don’t have to hold it all alone here. There is space to be met, understood, and gently begin to reconnect with yourself.

We face many challenges and this is perfectly normal, it happens to us all at some point. We seek counselling for a variety of reasons whether that being a relationship breakdown, mourning of a family member, depression, anxiety or just because we need someone to talk to. Counselling enables us to explore our thought feelings and emotions.

Hello, I’m Ben, a psychotherapist based in York, and I support people to resolve life and relationship difficulties. I support clients with childhood trauma, complex diagnosis, as well as seemly day to day issues.

I support children and families when things feel overwhelming or in crisis. My practice is transparent and collaborative, helping families work together. With a background in SEND Education and as a parent of two autistic children, I understand that the process needs to be as stress-free as possible. I offer a free initial consultation so parents feel informed and supported. Play therapy is gentle, child-led and non-directive, allowing children to explore safely at their own pace. Play and creative arts helps children with a sensory grounding—especially supportive for neurodiverse, traumatised, or looked after/adopted children.

You might be feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or unsure why certain emotions or body sensations keep showing up. Many people I work with feel disconnected from themselves or stuck in overwhelming patterns they can’t quite explain, often for a long period of time. I offer a calm, supportive space to explore what’s happening in your body and nervous system, helping you feel more grounded, regulated and connected again. This way of working can be particularly helpful if anxiety, stress or trauma show up physically through tension, fatigue, pain or shutdown.

How does art therapy work?
The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?
Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?
The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?
Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioural therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
