I have particular interests in Highly Sensitive Persons, Empaths, Gifted Adults, neurodiversity, issues from childhood and, as a middle-aged man, men’s issues such as finding a sense of purpose and juggling family and work commitments.
I have trained in person-centred counselling, mindfulness, CBT and coaching/mentoring so can bring a blend of therapy that can help you with whatever you are struggling with or want to achieve. My trauma-informed, person-centred approach means the therapy will be geared around what you need or want, rather than a fixed approach.

I find young male clients seem to respond particularly well to my way of working though work with a broad clientbase.
I am a Counsellor based in Manchester offering In person and online sessions. Life can be challenging, and in places it can feel intolerable and overwhelming it can be difficult to know where to start unravelling this, how to make changes, what changes, if any, we need to make, and to try to make sense of why we feel the way that we do. This can be a very painful experience but however dark it may be today, doesn't mean tomorrow won't be lighter, counselling can offer an opportunity to be heard and to be understood. I work with clients from all backgrounds but have particular experience working with Addiction and with LGBT+ issues.

You may have noticed that I'm male - not a common thing amongst therapists but often critical in challenging past negative experiences of masculinity.
You need to feel safe, listened to and understood and you need the confidence that I have the skills to help you on your journey. I can give you all of those things. In my work with children I use creativity to help the child tell and process their story. With adults we can sit and talk or use those same creative methods to make change - you have the option.

I have experience in with working with trauma, anxiety, depression and self esteem, unhelpful coping strategies and male survivors of sexual abuse and rape.
Our past and present are intimately linked by our memories. Our memories are heavily influenced and based on feelings we had surrounding an event or experience. These experiences may be impacting your life right now, even the ones that might seem irrelevant or insignificant. If we don't become aware of this connection it will keep affecting our future, which over time can cause us stress. Prolonged stress can manifest itself in physical forms, including illness, lack of energy, problems with sleep, headaches, depression and anxiety. When you are mentally healthy you are able to handle life's challenges.

Research shows that men sometimes feel they don’t have a safe space to talk - I can offer you this.
In short, it is the relationship between us that dictates the most positive outcomes. This is why I work collaboratively with my clients to create a non judgemental and empathetic environment where you feel able to freely express yourself. My approach is down to earth and I communicate with you openly.

I work with clients from many backgrounds, but make special mention that as a gay man with neurodiversity in my close family I welcome work with LGBTQIA+ people and with neurodivergent people.
I support clients struggling with anxiety, anger, trauma, overwhelm, and difficulty feeling and expressing emotions. I have experience working with suicidal ideation. You may feel stuck or alone, struggling to make sense of your own thoughts or feelings, to recover from past experiences, or how to feel okay in the here and now. I am interested in the stories that we tell ourselves, and how those stories help or hinder us as we navigate through life. I will work with you to better understand your story so that you can make real changes in your life, in your relationships with others, and in your relationship with yourself.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
