Psychodynamic Counselling in Saltford
A very warm welcome. Are you looking for a supportive, reflective space to work through your difficulties? Sometimes it’s hard to talk to family or friends and we need someone who offers a fresh perspective with warmth and understanding.
Together we can explore whatever is holding you back and help you find a way to move beyond it. All topics are welcome. Currently many of my clients are interested in uncovering a better sense of who they are, or finding their own authentic voice or inner strength, rather than pleasing others.

You may struggle with people-pleasing or with not feeling good enough, no matter how much you do for others. Saying “no” can bring guilt, decisions can feel paralysing and someone’s disappointment can leave you unsettled for days. Over time, this can leave you anxious, indecisive and disconnected from what you want.
These patterns often began as intelligent ways of keeping relationships safe. But what once protected you may now cost you confidence, clarity and vitality. You may feel responsible for others’ emotions, doubtful of your worth or frustrated that you can’t stop over-adapting.

People come to therapy for many reasons - sometimes because they're living with a mental health condition, sometimes because life feels overwhelming, and sometimes because something deeper is stirring that is hard to name. You're welcome here wherever you're starting from. Alongside supporting people through emotional distress, I'm especially drawn to the deeper layers of human experience: questions of identity, meaning, transition, and how to live a life that feels like your own. I offer a warm, steady presence where you can slow down, listen inwards and find language for what has felt confusing or unspoken.

You may find yourself questioning who you are beneath the roles, expectations, and adaptations that have helped you survive, while sensing a quiet longing to reconnect with your true self and the life you were meant to live.

After a while, trying to manage everything alone can feel isolating and unproductive. Thoughts repeat, worries build, and despite your best efforts, nothing really shifts. Therapy offers a collaborative space where we work together to understand, challenge, and change the patterns keeping you stuck. As a CBT therapist, I help you notice unhelpful cycles in thinking and behaviour, and develop practical ways to respond differently. This isn’t about “thinking positive,” but gaining clarity, control, and new ways of coping so life feels less overwhelming and more manageable.

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.
How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.
Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.
What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
