Together, we can work with whatever challenges you're facing. I favour a person-centered approach to cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and psychodynamic therapies (Attachment). I am available online but I prefer face-to-face appointments, with rooms in central Salisbury. Usually, I work with clients for an initial six sessions to alleviate distress and detangle some of life's challenges: acute stress, anxiety, burnout, low mood, depression, lack of motivation, relationship issues, seasonal affective disorder (SADs), trauma, and neurodiversity (ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia).

As a trauma informed therapist, I strive to provide a safe and non-judgemental space where you can share thoughts & feelings that make you feel not good enough. Working with Shame, Guilt and Anxiety we can gently explore and safely re-process some of your most challenging experiences and what they have meant for you in your life. Shame can often present as similar to feeling depressed and it can be so hard to get out of, especially alone. It thrives on isolation, silence and judgement. The antidote to shame is empathy. If we reach out and share our experiences with someone who provides understanding and empathy, shame dissipates.

Thanks for looking at my profile. I am a highly experienced counsellor, seeing individuals, couples and teenagers. What makes someone choose a counsellor, because it seems we all pretty much offer the same therapies. Is it the warm photograph to promote ourselves or the letters after our name. At this point most people have stopped reading, but if you continue you may see how I can help you.

Therapy can be a place of warmth, exploration, relief, insight and even humour. You may be seeking help during a crisis, grappling with a longstanding issue that seems insurmountable, or simply aiming to delve deeper into self-discovery, or you may be looking for a welcoming, open, and supportive environment where you can express yourself securely and confidentially. I consider therapy a collaborative journey, where we work together to investigate the factors that have brought you to this point and empower you to uncover new paths forward.

I work with families, couples and individuals. Specialising in relationships, anger, self-esteem issues, addictions and emotional difficulties, I help you have a better relationship with others as well as yourself. I work with you to explore and understand your struggles, repeating patterns and find ways to change them or adapt them to make them helpful. Couples tend to argue in a cyclic nature without ever resolving their arguments. I work with couples to understand this cycle and how to exit it. Individuals can also get stuck in repeating patterns. Examining them, understanding them and working through them brings change.

Life will always present us with challenges and difficult situations. Sometimes these challenges can get on top of us and we stop living and enjoying our lives as fully as we would like. This is where counselling can be of help. Counselling is about offering a supportive relationship in a safe and confidential environment to talk through whatever is concerning them. Counselling is not about giving advice and counsellors can never be experts in other people’s lives. Counselling is about helping people find their unique strengths to work through a particular issue in the best way for them so that they can live a happy life.

People come to see me for many reasons: They may find themselves feeling confused or overwhelmed and longing to find clarity about a particular issue. They may have achieved a great deal in their lives but are still feeling that something vital is missing. They may have lost their passion and purpose and yearn to find it again. They may want to discover how to tap into their deepest wisdom so that they can find the best way forward in their lives. Some long to find a way of liberating their creativity. Yet others want to deepen or discover their spiritual lives. Each person is unique and I tailor the work to suit each one.

I am an experienced, qualified and approachable psychotherapist working with individual adults. Feelings of depression, anxiety or a lack of direction or meaning in life need to be understood in a broad context. By looking at our whole life we can uncover who we really are and where we wish to go. I offer a safe space where troublesome, dark and difficult feelings can be examined and explored - by bringing them into the light we open up the possibility of facing and understanding them.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
