My name is Dave Phelps, and I am a counsellor in Redruth, Cornwall, and online with nearly a decade of specialist experience. My counselling gives you the space to be yourself and speak freely, with no fear of judgement. I work with all aspects of anxiety, depression, and other trauma-related issues, providing the space you need to explore these difficulties in a way that suits you. No issue is too small or trivial; your problems are valid, whatever they may be, so don’t hesitate to get in touch and ask any questions. All first sessions are half price and available to both adults and adolescents.

Hi, I hope your search for a therapist is going well. It can be a difficult process, but it is important to find a therapist who feels right for you. The relationship with your therapist is, on average, more helpful than their training and experience. Person-centred therapy is a relationship. It is not dependent on medical diagnoses, yet can help with all conditions. It is as effective as other leading therapies, but uniquely it puts the client at the centre of the process. There is no 'you should do this'. The questions, and the answers, will come from within during our conversations.

I have worked with and supported individuals with a range of complex mental health difficulties for over twenty years, initially as a nurse and now as a qualified CBT therapist . Many of my clients have needed an alternative way to view their situation to 'free' them from the distress they have been experiencing, along with a tailored tool box of coping strategies which they can choose from to empower them to manage the challenging experience. I have helped adolescent & adults experiencing OCD, PTSD, psychosis and/or complex emotional/relational difficulties, where the intervention required has been stress/anxiety targeted.

When starting therapy you will be able to explore current and past relationships, experiences and feelings, in a safe and containing environment. Therapy is an opportunity to speak about painful experiences and feelings, to make sense of them and be able to look at them in a different light. The unconscious material, memories and traumas, will be able to emerge in a setting where they can be processed safely. The first session is an opportunity to discuss what brings you to therapy and to establish goals for our sessions. Therapy can be challenging and difficult at times, but I will be there to support you all the way through it.

I am a relational integrative therapist. This means that you and I work in partnership to navigate a way to support you to face whichever challenges you would like to overcome. Sometimes this can be achieved through short-term work (up to 12 weeks) and sometimes a contract for much longer work will be what you need. The development of relationship between me (the therapist), and you (the client) is the driving force of how I work. Through the development of a trusted alliance we can begin to explore any vulnerabilities you bring safely in order to make sense of them together.

Do you need to talk to someone will listen without judgement? Are you feeling stressed, unhappy, like you are stuck in repeating patterns? Personal problems, difficult life experiences and relationship issues can create internal conflict, which then gets supressed. You end up putting on a 'mask' to carry on but the problems remain unresolved, continuing to have a detrimental impact on your sense of self and wellbeing. Exploring how you are feeling with a skilled therapist facilitates insight and conscious awareness, which enables you to explore possibilities and find solutions, which then lead to positive change and personal growth.

Do you walk on eggshells in certain relationships? Do you struggle to say no or set boundaries. Do you feel like your reality is being questioned? Have you been in a relationship that has been verbally abusive? Do you not have control of your finances, or personal decision making? Do conversations sound like they are 'crazy making' or going in circles. Sometimes we feel like we have lost ourselves in our relationships. Or we have experienced significant psychological abuse in the past. I help people make sense of their experiences in a safe and nurturing environment. You are not alone and can improve your life.

Hi, I am a registered psychologist with the HCPC. I have worked in the NHS for over seventeen years including children and adolescents, adults, EIS (psychosis) and also prison mental health, so my experience is pretty varied. I also complete ASC assessments as part of a multi disciplinary team

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Counsellors

How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?

Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like Cognitive behavioural therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behaviour therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.

Are there specific medications for dissociation?

There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom which may include antipsychotics, antidepressants, or anti-anxiety drugs.

How often and how long are therapy sessions?

Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
