My 20 years experience as an accredited counsellor adds a depth to my coaching that ensures that clients know that they are in a safe pair of hands. Clients from all walks of life work with me. Senior executives, both men and women. Lawyers and those in Human Resources. Business owners. Individuals seeking to improve and understand their thoughts and actions, who want to live in a more purposeful way. Those who feel out of kilter with their true selves and do not understand their core values. Life can be complex and having as safe space to make goals and find a new way forward can be life changing.

I’m a psychotherapeutic counsellor & mindfulness instructor. I am passionate about working with women and men with depression, anxiety or trauma such as sexual abuse, childhood trauma, domestic violence or suicide. My aim is for you to feel heard and accepted. This may be the first time you've spoken to anyone about what you're going through, so I offer a place to process your experiences, helping you to gently come to terms with the feelings you are facing. Our sessions will allow you to understand how your experiences have affected your feelings, behaviour and relationships, providing you with coping strategies for the future.

Website: rhodascantleburycounselling.co.uk Counselling gives you your own time and space to consider what is going on, who you are and who you want to be. The possibility of time and space might feel important because you're currently experiencing something where your own resources no longer feel sufficient to cope. Perhaps you see that you're responding to situations with more anxiety, anger or distress than feels entirely manageable, or it may be that you're feeling very little and have a sense of being out of touch with yourself or others. I'm able to support you in several ways:

Starting therapy can feel daunting, especially if you’ve been holding things in for a while. I offer a warm, encouraging space for adolescents and adults to explore anxiety, low mood, trauma, burnout, and life transitions. Clients often come to me feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected from themselves. My approach is relational and trauma-informed, integrating talking therapy with creative and body-based techniques. We work together at your pace to uncover what’s going on underneath and gently move toward clarity, emotional ease, and self-trust. You’re welcome here — just as you are.

Speaking with someone for the first time about personal issues or trauma can feel really daunting. It is important to feel safe and not judged when talking about difficult things, and my aim is for us to develop a relationship where you can explore whatever it is that you need to. There is not an exhaustive list of the reasons for coming to counselling initially but one thing is sure and that is it begins with building trust and beginning to speak openly. Our sessions will be collaborative: I will facilitate, but you will lead the way. Even if you can't pin point why things feel difficult, you're not alone.

Are you experiencing challenges in your relationships that feel difficult to resolve? You may feel exhausted by constant conflict, depressed and just not yourself. Perhaps you feel invisible and distant to your partner, and none of your efforts to make things better seem to work. You know change is necessary but you can't see a way forward. Perhaps you are wondering whether to leave the relationship but that thought feels scary and uncertain, like a constant, heavy weight? Being in this place can leave you overwhelmed and and deeply confused. The thought of the future feels uncertain and yet you know that you want more from life.

At times life is tough and this can challenge our emotional health and well being, making us feel overwhelmed, stuck, anxious, depressed, angry or lacking in self esteem. You may be finding it difficult to put words to your current feelings or make any sense of what you are experiencing and this can be both frightening and isolating. I believe counselling can be a transformative and meaningful experience, with change made possible through a supportive therapeutic relationship, which helps us to move towards acceptance of self or empowerment to positive change. As such, I am dedicated to bringing about healing and growth in others.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
