Domestic Abuse Counselling in Rugby

I work with people experiencing anxiety, stress, anger and burnout. Typically my clients are outwardly coping but internally tense, overthinking or exhausted. This can show up as snapping at family, constant worry, difficulty switching off after work, loss of confidence, panic symptoms, or feeling stuck despite doing everything expected of them. By understanding yourself in terms of thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, you can consider change, and create your own action plan on how you can live your life better, in the way you want to.

I know from my own experience that it is not easy to face trauma. From my own experience, outwardly, I was showing my strong self. Full of confidence and resilience, to please the society that is often judgemental about how I presented myself. I behaved in a manner people around me expected – to be strong and to rise above what had happened and be that bigger person. Deep down, however, I was experiencing something very different. I was losing confidence in myself and began to experience shame – a painful feeling that I was somehow flawed, broken and unworthy of love and belonging.

I support people affected by trauma, domestic or narcissistic abuse, and those living with bipolar disorder.
Hello, I’m Justin. When life has become about getting through each day rather than really living, it can be hard to know where to start. You don’t need to have everything figured out before getting in touch. You might be feeling overwhelmed, struggling with something that’s happened, finding relationships difficult, or simply knowing that something doesn’t feel right. We can start with what’s happening for you now and make sense of it together.

I have significant experience working with trauma related to domestic abuse, which often involves themes of low confidence, self-esteem, guilt and shame, anxiety, and depression.
Hi, hello. My name is Kate, and I’m a person-centred, relational therapist. I understand how daunting it can feel to acknowledge that something isn’t right and to reach out for help. My aim is to help you feel at ease and supported, and to answer any questions you may have along the way. Having experienced self-esteem issues throughout my life, I know firsthand the power of therapy and how life-changing it can be. This experience led me to retrain as a therapist so that I could offer others the same sense of safety, understanding, and support that I received.

People often come to therapy when they’ve reached a point where simply “pushing through” is no longer working. This might show up as ongoing relationship difficulties, a loss of connection with self or others, challenges with self-image or identity, or repeating patterns that don't seem to shift. In our work together, we explore what sits beneath recurring patterns while also developing practical tools to manage life more effectively, relate differently, and make changes that feel meaningful and lasting.

I’m a neurodivergent therapist working with clients who want to understand themselves more deeply and live more authentically. You might feel like you’ve spent years masking who you are, struggling to feel truly understood, or finding relationships harder than they seem for others. You may feel disconnected, unsure of yourself, or like you can't be the “real” you. Many of my clients are autistic, ADHD or AuDHD (inclusive of those self-diagnosed or questioning). I therefore work in a neurodiversity-affirming way, where the aim is to understand how your mind works and what you need

Domestic Abuse Counsellors
What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?
Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognise that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.

When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?
Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.

What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?
Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.

How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?
It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
