Perhaps you are looking for help to find your bearings while going through a time of crisis and/or you who wish to examine your life more fully to address issues that have affected you over time. With the help of therapy, you can start understanding your inner world and thought patterns more clearly and remove the feelings of anxiety and worry from your mind. Psychoanalytic psychotherapy aims to go deep into your emotions, understanding how your early life has formed strategies that might contribute to unhelpful patterns in adulthood with the aim of gradually removing distress, helping you to live a fuller life.

Hi, my name is Gordon. Welcome! I am a full qualified therapist working online and in person from my consulting room in Manchester zone one. Personal therapy helped me to untangle my relationship with myself and my emotions from others. The world alone is a chaotic place to manage our own unknowns, anxieties, and traumas. I understand that everyone experiences the world in different ways, so unique problems require bespoke responses. Our lives are constantly changing, so it’s natural to feel emotions strongly, think differently and respond atypically. I help clients explore all spheres of their life to help build hope and cope

People seek therapy when they are dissatisfied or unhappy and feel that it is possible to make changes but this is very difficult alone. Psychotherapy is a particular type of conversation exploring thoughts, feelings and relationships. Psychotherapy offers the opportunity to think about what is troubling in a safe setting to understand and improve relationships, both with ourselves and others. My thinking and approach places relationships at the heart of experience. When patterns in relationships can be understood we can feel liberated to change.

I work both in-person and online where we can safely explore any issues that you may have in confidence. I strongly believe that everyone can benefit from counselling, provided they have a good connection with their counsellor. That is why the relationship is at the heart of my work. I work with a wide range of people, I am passionate about working with those who identify as LGBTQ+ and those who may be questioning their sexual orientation and/or gender identity. Being queer myself, I have a deep understanding of the different struggles and discrimination we face day to day. I am also kink, poly/open relationship friendly.

You may be feeling stuck, disconnected, or weighed down by past experiences that still affect how you live and relate today. Many of my clients come with a history of trauma, difficult relationships, or disordered eating patterns. You may want to understand yourself more deeply, make sense of your story, and find a way to live with greater clarity, purpose, and self-compassion.

Life is difficult at the best of times but we are living through harsh times at the moment, which is creating stress and anxiety in many people. Where normally you could cope with issues, the pressure now is affecting people's emotional and mental health. If you can identify with this and feel you need some extra support in the way of counselling then please contact me. Together we can begin to explore your unique situation and whatever issue you feel you need support with. This will be at your pace, in a safe and secure environment and in a non-judgemental way. You will be treated with kindness, empathy and respect.

Suicidal Ideation Counsellors

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioural therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
