My counselling experience is diverse and includes working with people who have struggled with bereavement, anxiety, depression , work stress, identity and relationship issues (with partners/spouses, friends, family or work colleagues).
Welcome. I'm Zoe Purse. I provide counselling to individuals and young people in the lovely Rossendale Valley, Lancashire. I work from home in a purpose built log cabin in rural surroundings yet right in the heart of town. There is easy access to local transport and motorway links. I have also supported people with life limiting illness or with bereavement and loss counselling at a hospice in Manchester. I am passionate about helping people who are going through difficult, emotional turmoil and understand that everyone is unique. I offer support with understanding and empathy along side being non-judgmental, caring and genuine.

There is so much focus these days on "What's wrong with you" using terms such as ' depression ', 'anxiety', 'disorder', rather than talking about "What happened to you?" Your mental health is much more than just a label or a diagnosis and therapy offers so much more than just talking. It can give you new understanding, new insights, a different perspective, clarity about a problem and the way forward. It can teach you skills to live your life better, teach you more healthy coping strategies or simply give you the space and time for self reflection and a place to find peace of mind.

Counselling is proven to help with depression and anxiety as well as life struggles that occur as we move through life - each person is unique and what suits one, may not suit you - in the first instance, it is my role to find out what works for you and then to support you through the process, making any necessary changes as we go along.
I am a fully qualified BACP accredited counsellor. I offer you a supportive environment for you to explore life’s difficulties and challenges ethically, safely and without judgement. My belief is that no matter what age we are, we all have the potential for growth and change and it is a continuous process. In addition to general counselling, I hold Practitioner status endorsed by the National Centre for Eating Disorders which qualifies me to work with all aspects of disordered eating and I have recently undergone training with the RNIB to work with counselling for sight loss.

Life has changed so much in the past months, and we are seeing the impacts of that change on mental health. The spirit of 'just carry on' can only last so long before you need to talk, shout, scream and cry, to allow yourself the time for that to put you first. My experiences in the voluntary sector and private practice have shown me that no matter where you are in life, emotional issues and crisis are levelling, their impact devastating and to admit you need to talk to someone in itself can feel daunting. However this in itself can be a positive first step to gaining a healthier relationship with yourself.

Sometimes the issues we face paralyse us with anxieties. Sometimes we have no one in our lives who are able to help or we may not want to burden others. It’s difficult to trust people with our innermost worries, feelings and thoughts. Yet we all need help to get through difficult periods in our lives. It may be that friends and family tell us to stop dwelling on the past or try and move on. But no matter how hard we try, the past hangs around to haunt us or we have no words to describe what we feel. Additionally, we may wish to explore our experience for personal or professional reasons.

People often first come for counselling when they begin to experience symptoms of low mood and anxiety such as disturbed sleep, low levels of motivation and energy, or increased rates of irritability and tension which just don’t seem to shift. These symptoms could be related to a significantly upsetting event, or they might be linked to a background of adversities and difficulties. Either way, you might be hoping to improve your mood and to reduce feelings of anxiety or panic, to regain a sense of confidence and self esteem, and to feel more energised and motivated. People often say they want to get back to their old self again.

Hi I'm Angela. Coming to counselling can feel like such a big step. There may be an obvious reason as to why you're feeling low, such as bereavement or a traumatic event. Equally you could be feeling sad and you don't really understand why. Perhaps you're struggling with anxiety or depression , or you're having panic attacks? Many people are struggling with their mental health for the first time due to COVID 19. Whatever you're going through I'd like to help you feel better. I'm trained in both Person Centred Counselling and Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS). You can choose to work with either model or a combination of the two.

I work with clients who have suffered; loss, trauma, depression , anxiety, negative thoughts, suicidal thoughts, separation, divorce, relationship issues.
We all have times when we have to face challenges and juggle life; this can be a very stressful time. When we are feeling, sad, alone, stressed, anxious, depressed or having relationship worries these can seem overwhelming. You may feel unable to talk to friends or family for fear of being judged. It's at times like these that we may need a helping hand, a safe place to talk, someone to talk to without feeling judged and someone who will listen to you.

I help people with issues which affect everyday life - eg, low mood or self esteem, anxiety, depression , intrusive thoughts, relationship issues, communication, conflict resolution.
Do you feel like you're going round and round with a problem - maybe with a relationship or how you see yourself? Maybe you don't know how you want things to be, or you know what you want but can't work out how to do it, or don't have the courage to follow through? Are you constantly thinking about a particular person and wishing the situation, or one of you, could be different? Are you worried friends/family are tired of hearing about your problems? Are you feeling anxious, angry, rejected, or unimportant? Whatever your issues, I can help you talk about and process them, find solutions, and feel more at ease with yourself.

Are you feeling like you are: 'out of sorts', ' depressed ', 'sad', 'anxious', 'lonely', 'worried', 'stressed', 'fearful' or any other description that just doesn't feel like the real you? Do you need someone to 'hear and understand' you, to help you make sense of it all. Maybe you've tried family members, loved ones and friends and now feel that you are burdening them, getting nowhere and not really able to truly open up to them for fear of being judged, shamed or shocking them.

Depression Counsellors
Depressive disorders are characterized by persistent feelings of sadness and worthlessness and a lack of desire to engage in formerly pleasurable activities. Depression is not a passing blue mood, which almost everyone experiences from time to time, but a complex mind/body illness that interferes with everyday functioning. It not only darkens one's outlook, it is commonly marked by sleep problems and changes in energy levels and appetite. It alters the structure and function of nerve cells so that it disrupts the way the brain processes information and interprets experience.

Despite feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness, depression is a treatable condition. It can be treated with psychotherapy by depression counsellors in Rossendale. As with many illnesses, the earlier treatment begins, the more effective it can be and the greater the likelihood that recurrence can be prevented.

Psychotherapy addresses the thinking patterns that precipitate depression, and studies show that it prevents recurrence. Drug therapy is often helpful in relieving symptoms, such as severe anxiety, so that people can engage in meaningful psychotherapy.
