Bereavement Counselling in Rossendale
People often first come for counselling when they begin to experience symptoms of low mood and anxiety such as disturbed sleep, low levels of motivation and energy, or increased rates of irritability and tension which just don’t seem to shift. These symptoms could be related to a significantly upsetting event, or they might be linked to a background of adversities and difficulties. Either way, you might be hoping to improve your mood and to reduce feelings of anxiety or panic, to regain a sense of confidence and self esteem, and to feel more energised and motivated. People often say they want to get back to their old self again.

There is so much focus these days on "What's wrong with you" using terms such as 'depression', 'anxiety', 'disorder', rather than talking about "What happened to you?" Your mental health is much more than just a label or a diagnosis and therapy offers so much more than just talking. It can give you new understanding, new insights, a different perspective, clarity about a problem and the way forward. It can teach you skills to live your life better, teach you more healthy coping strategies or simply give you the space and time for self reflection and a place to find peace of mind.

Sometimes the issues we face paralyse us with anxieties. Sometimes we have no one in our lives who are able to help or we may not want to burden others. It’s difficult to trust people with our innermost worries, feelings and thoughts. Yet we all need help to get through difficult periods in our lives. It may be that friends and family tell us to stop dwelling on the past or try and move on. But no matter how hard we try, the past hangs around to haunt us or we have no words to describe what we feel. Additionally, we may wish to explore our experience for personal or professional reasons.

Maybe a diagnosis, a loss, caring responsibilities, the fog of menopause or reaching burnout has finally made that impossible.
I know first-hand what it takes to finally ask for help - and how much it can change things. Twenty years in the corporate world and my own experience of life's harder moments led me to counselling, both as a client and ultimately as a practitioner. With practice within Macmillan and the NHS, I bring understanding that goes far beyond training alone.

I work with adult individuals from all backgrounds, with particular experience in supporting people living with ADHD, those affected by narcissistic abuse, grief and life transitions; all recognised situations that bring about anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem.
You may not know it, but you've already taken the first step. It can be scary and confusing making the decision to contact a therapist, but in my experience people will struggle with a problem for much longer than is healthy. Sometimes a friend can provide a source of comfort, but this help can only go so far.
I offer a calm, grounded space where you can talk openly — without judgment or pressure to be anything other than yourself.
My approach is kind, reflective, and relational, supporting you to make sense of what feels difficult and move toward clarity, self-understanding, and change at your own pace.

How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
