There is so much focus these days on "What's wrong with you" using terms such as 'depression', 'anxiety', 'disorder', rather than talking about "What happened to you?" Your mental health is much more than just a label or a diagnosis and therapy offers so much more than just talking. It can give you new understanding, new insights, a different perspective, clarity about a problem and the way forward. It can teach you skills to live your life better, teach you more healthy coping strategies or simply give you the space and time for self reflection and a place to find peace of mind.

People often first come for counselling when they begin to experience symptoms of low mood and anxiety such as disturbed sleep, low levels of motivation and energy, or increased rates of irritability and tension which just don’t seem to shift. These symptoms could be related to a significantly upsetting event, or they might be linked to a background of adversities and difficulties. Either way, you might be hoping to improve your mood and to reduce feelings of anxiety or panic, to regain a sense of confidence and self esteem, and to feel more energised and motivated. People often say they want to get back to their old self again.

I work with adults (18+) from all walks of life, those living with the effects of trauma, addiction, abuse, anxiety, depression, loss, relationship difficulties and complex life experiences. Many of the people I support have felt misunderstood, marginalised or have been described as 'too complex' or 'hard to engage'. I believe no one is too complex' for therapy. Some people simply need a therapist with the experience, curiosity and confidence to understand. I bring nearly 20 years' experience working with some of the most vulnerable or socially excluded members of our communities as well as my own lived experience of these issues.

Hello! I’m Leanne, a Psychodynamically trained counsellor based in the High Peak. I believe true healing begins when we allow ourselves to verbalise and truly feel our emotions. So much of modern society works to keep us distracted and out of touch with ourselves and those around us. My approach is designed to help you connect with the overlooked parts of yourself - past and present, without judgment and at your own pace. With warmth and empathy, I have created a space for you to show up, just as you are.

Sometimes we can feel stuck and need a safe space to explore ourselves and what we’re going through. A space where we can rebuild into a more empowered version of who we are or simply deconstruct to uncover our authentic inner self. Sometimes, it’s about finding our voice to hear ourselves and to be heard. Other times, it’s about carefully ending a chapter in a meaningful and harmonious way that honors the versions of ourselves we’ve been, while starting a new chapter full of hope and curiosity. Whatever life brings, therapy offers the quiet, sensitive support needed to process both the highs and lows.

I work as a therapist because of the privilege of journeying with another, often through difficult territory, in the direction of self-understanding and healing. I offer both face-to-face, outdoor and online therapy. I love co-creating a healing space (indoors or outdoors) in which you can work with, and process, your concerns. I’ve been so lucky to have been practicing as a therapist, supervisor and lecturer for nearly 30 years and to bring this experience to the therapy space, along with my mindfulness training. Please reach out if you wish to discuss how my way of working may help you.

My name is Kelly, thank you for visiting my page. I am trained in a variety of different therapies which help me collaborate with clients to find the right approaches and techniques that work for you, no two people are the same, and one size does not fit all. This is a two-way process to fine tune and see what helps you best. A large part of this is talking together, I also work somatically (checking in with the breath and physical symptoms of emotional distress) and can offer creative approaches if this is of interest. I offer a free 25 minute phone or video call conversation to see if we would be a good fit to work together.

How does art therapy work?
The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?
Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?
The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?
Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioural therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
