I have an open and approachable nature which is underpinned by an empathic core. I allow each client to bring their own content and to guide the sessions. I work with each client in an individualistic manner and can choose a particular modality (CBT, Person-Centred, Psychodynamic) which I believe, fits the content. I will use the initial session to understand your needs and what you hope to gain from counselling. I am also a qualified Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner within the NHS and can deliver low intensity CBT treatment.

I'm Melanie, I have been a Counsellor for 18 years. I Specialise in couples therapy. Common issues that can impact a relationship are: Communication Issues. Emotional Distance. Affairs & Infidelity. Intimacy Issues. Significant Life Events. Overcoming Trauma. Some people will find the experience strengthens their relationship, others will realise separating and moving on independently is the best option for them. Not everyone in the relationship might end the process feeling the same way. I believe that strong relationships improve lives, families and mental health. I can offer you both a safe space to work on relationship issues.

The ideal client is reflected by his need to try to overcome the moments of life. The problems they face are often stalemates, unfavorable situations that cause them to do strange and regrettable things.Their needs are in the first instance, to find a way / plan / aid / to benefit from, finally, a support to guide them. Objectives are of two types: general and secondary; the first offers the perspective of an overview, and the specific / secondary details each step to achieve the ultimate goal. Finally, solving by: discovery, understanding, acceptance, and attitude change occurs. Most clients that I see are suffering with anxiety, depression and stress. Most of this is caused by underlying issues such as low self-esteem, relationships issues and addiction to name a few. We're often aware of what our problems are but do not feel able to cope and need some support. Distressing situations and feelings can have such a destructive impact on our lives and therapy works by accepting your feelings, helping you to gain a different perspective, whilst challenging old negative beliefs; so you can move forward with a happier and healthier outlook on life.

How many minutes, hours, days, weeks, months or years have you spent wanting to change the way you live your life? How many different methods have you tried to silence your inner critic ? But failed because self doubt, guilt, anger, shame, procrastination or fear has kept you psychologically paralysed? How many times have you told yourself that you are going to stop your self destructive behaviour, only to find yourself embroiled in the same self defeating habits the next day, week or month? Do you see yourself ebbing further and further away from your life goals, dreams and ambitions?

Alcohol Use Counsellors

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
