Thank you for reading my profile. It can feel daunting to take the first step in receiving help. I have over 15 years experience, working with many different client groups with a range of issues and challenges. I can promise you that if you work with me you will receive a safe, non-judgemental space to explore what’s on your mind. Every therapist works differently, depending on their training and experience. I am flexible and I will adapt if something else comes up, if you want to work on more than one issue, or you want to change your focus. This is a natural part of the process, often it is not linear and requires flexibility.

How we feel at any given moment tells a story about the experiences that we’ve had and how they have shaped us. Overcoming emotional difficulties in a world full of uncertainty, and ongoing pressures can feel very difficult. Taking that first step towards looking after your mental health can be daunting, but the rewards and potential benefits can be life changing. Developing a strong formulation is at the very core of my therapeutic approach - Together we can create a space to fully understand the thing that is threatening your well-being and happiness, and develop strategies for overcoming them.

I'm Melanie, I have been a Counsellor for 18 years. I Specialise in couples therapy. Common issues that can impact a relationship are: Communication Issues. Emotional Distance. Affairs & Infidelity. Intimacy Issues. Significant Life Events. Overcoming Trauma. Some people will find the experience strengthens their relationship, others will realise separating and moving on independently is the best option for them. Not everyone in the relationship might end the process feeling the same way. I believe that strong relationships improve lives, families and mental health. I can offer you both a safe space to work on relationship issues.

I specialise in narcissistic abuse in relationships and the workplace. I work with anxiety and trauma alongside the dissociation from emotions this can cause. I have worked with survivors of domestic violence and bereaved families within a hospice setting. I also work for a society with worldwide clients recovering from narcissistic abuse. Exploring variations from your personal life within therapy is hugely important as I believe that no client is the same; regardless of whether they are experiencing loss, anxiety or an abusive narcissistic relationship.

I have an open and approachable nature which is underpinned by an empathic core. I allow each client to bring their own content and to guide the sessions. I work with each client in an individualistic manner and can choose a particular modality (CBT, Person-Centred, Psychodynamic) which I believe, fits the content. I will use the initial session to understand your needs and what you hope to gain from counselling. I am also a qualified Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner within the NHS and can deliver low intensity CBT treatment.

I believe that counselling offers a journey of discovery to reach positive change. This is paramount when working with clients that are reaching out for a space to talk over challenges. I understand how unresolved issues can contribute to feeling stuck in life, resolution could help to move life forwards again. I provide a counselling experience that will offer a journey of discovery to reach positive change. Regular sessions will embrace reaching full potential and thinking forwards to the future, while exploring past and present. In turn clarity and discovery can restore and support personal development and growth.

How can I find a therapist in Romford?

Search for nearby therapists or counsellors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or postcode; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counsellors are all licensed mental health professionals. In many countries, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counsellor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counsellors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counsellor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counselling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
