In psychotherapy there is an opportunity to get to know yourself in depth and discover new ways of living your life. Often we have repetitive patterns and ways of thinking that can for instance cause suffering, frustration, anxiety and sadness in our life. Despite our best efforts to decide to behave and relate differently, we drift back to our old ways of being and behaving. In psychotherapy we will work at getting to know your unconscious inner life. A lot of feelings and thoughts we have are not conscious and psychotherapy gives you the opportunity to reflect and try out new ways when you feel change is needed.

Acknowledging that we need help and reaching out is a really big, and sometimes a daunting step and it is important that you find the right counsellor for you. Whether you have been feeling anxious, depressed, lost, stressed, isolated, overwhelmed or misunderstood, I can support you. I offer a safe, non-judgemental space for you to explore what makes you “you”. This can include exploring how events of the past might be influencing the present, to understand how you experience and cope with life’s stresses and consider how you might want to challenge and adapt these to feel more fulfilled.

Feeling nobody quite "Gets YOU?" Impulsive, unmotivated, head spiriling, ruminating, masking due to ADHD/ASD? Drugs or alcohol used to self medicate, relax or cope with stress but now noticed its getting out of control? Anxiety, panic attacks, intrusive thoughts starting to control your life but not sure the trigger? Or do you just have a sense something is wrong but struggle to open up or express how you feel to your partner, family or friends? The beauty of talking to a counsellor is I am neutral and independent of your situation which can make it easier to open up and explore your feelings and thoughts.

I understand how daunting it can be to begin counselling. Whatever you’re struggling with, be it depression, grief, self-esteem or relationship issues, we can look at the jigsaw pieces of your life together, to help you gain clarity. This may involve exploring the past to identify patterns in emotions and behaviours which shine a light on current issues. You may be grappling with life’s meaning after bereavement, a relationship breakdown or job loss. Any kind of loss can have a huge impact on our mental wellbeing. I work with you to help you make sense of things & find meaning and purpose in order to move forward and feel less lost.

Dealing with challenges in daily life can be tough. Are you feeling stuck in your life? Has your relationship changed? Or you are no longer happy with your partner or family members? Perhaps, you are dealing with parenting challenges, having a baby and being a parent can bring great joy, but it can also be difficult. It is normal to feel low and not like yourself, and it is okay to struggle to understand your birth experience. Feeling guilty about not meeting your own expectations can also make life feel hard. Or are you feeling lonely because your beliefs do not align with your parents' values?

Starting therapy can feel really overwhelming, and if you have never been before you may be worried about what will happen. I am here to listen and offer you a safe space to explore your life and your feelings. I work in a person-centred way but also pull from other theories and methods and like to feel like we are working alongside each other to make any changes you want to see in your life. In our first session I will introduce myself and we can have a look at what has brought you to therapy and if working together seems like a good fit.

Women's Issues Counsellors

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realised.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
