Many of us suffer from anxiety, depression and stress during our lives. We may even experience trauma. As a person-centred counsellor trained in a pluralistic model, I have worked with various issues that people deal with on a daily basis. Therapy is a shared endeavour where a safe, open and non-judgemental space is essential to the therapy process.

I never imagined that childhood experiences such as changing schools six times, not having many friends and a bicycle accident could have given me trauma that would impact me in adulthood. It was only when I began training to be a counsellor and received personal therapy (as a course requirement) that I fully understood. Since becoming a counsellor, it has been my passion to help people struggling with trauma related issues including depression, anxiety, anger, grief and abuse. If you are looking for someone who is non-judgmental, has a good listening ear and really cares about helping people then you have found the right person.

Anxiety or depression can manifest in many different ways: difficulty sleeping, loss of appetite, lack of enjoyment in favoured activities, lessening attention span, loss of or lack of identity, difficulty in clear thought or intrusive thoughts to name just a few. At times it's not always clear why we feel the way we do, perhaps you are feeling overwhelmed or are engaging in patterns of behaviour which are negatively affecting your life. Conversely you may be all too aware of events or relationships which have or are affecting your mental wellbeing and wish to explore these in a supportive and nurturing environment.

I’m a counselling therapist based in Hove, Brighton. I specialise in addiction but work with many other issues too including couples. We will explore & endeavour to shed new light on your way of being in the world, thus far, & how your past has informed your sense of self in the present & how you might want to enhance your life still further by bringing yourself out of the shadows & into the light? We don’t see the world as it is but as we; so who are we, really? I use “parts” work to free us to “Self-lead” to restore calmness; clarity; confidence; connectedness; compassion; courage; creativity; curiosity in & around us………………………

At times we may experience difficult emotions which we struggle to control. We may know why, or it may be a mystery to us. Wrestling with these feelings may give rise to anxiety or feeling withdrawn and low. We may also have long-standing difficulties, stemming from past experiences, that constrain our lives and compromise our relationships. Abuse, bullying and neglect can have a deep and lasting impact on our emotional wellbeing. These emotional difficulties can affect many aspects of life including sexuality, relationships, family, work, diet and physical health.

I trained as an integrative counsellor which means that I work using more than one theoretical basis; 1) The Hu manistic Tradition - using relationship to deliver change and empower the client.
Sometimes in life we can lose our way. Anxiety and depression or traumatic events can stop us from realising our potential. You may want to unpack destructive relationships, come to terms with grief and loss, or you might be unable to move forward with your life and cannot understand why. I am offering a safe, non-judgemental space to explore and understand those parts of life which cause pain and sorrow.

Is life getting you down? Do you feel listened to and supported? Are you struggling to like yourself? Do you sometimes feel you may be acting against your own best interests? Do you wonder why, so much of the time, you feel unable to bring about lasting change in the ways you relate to other people, and to life generally? I believe that early life experiences are critical to the person we become. Some of those early experiences will work to our good, whilst others may be at the root of why we find ourselves struggling, often without realising it. Self-awareness is key.

Adding to that confusion are the many different ways therapists can work! However, the most important thing is to pick someone who you feel drawn to.
I am an Integrative Psychotherapist and Supervisor with extensive experience working with mild to severe psychological difficulties across settings that include private practice, third sector, primary care, and NHS inpatient psychiatric hospitals. As a clinician, I'm deeply committed to helping people heal and find a way forward, bringing them closer to a life they want. You may feel unable to describe what you're going through, but know something simply isn't feeling right. Or, you may know exactly what the difficulty is, but struggle to find a way forward. Either way, therapy can support you with your goals.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
