Perhaps you have become used to coping, holding things together or hiding how difficult things feel. Inside, you may feel overwhelmed, disconnected from yourself, troubled by the past, or confused by thoughts, feelings and responses that can be difficult to explain. You don’t need to arrive with a clear story or the “right” words. I work with adults experiencing trauma, dissociation, anxiety and emotional distress, including experiences that may not have felt fully understood before.

I’m Neurodivergent aware.
Hi I'm Matthew. My style is warm and free of judgement. It’s often easier to talk to a confidential person unconnected to family or friends. I work with anxiety and depression, relationships, loss, abuse, betrayal, low self-esteem, anger, rejection sensitivity, or those who are stuck. I have a particular interest in the experience of autistic and ADHD people. Improvement comes from insight, new behaviours, understanding and acceptance but also from stepwise, practical change. If agreed I can work in a more active and future focused way with the current advice, tools, exercises and activities supported by the evidence base.

Many clients arrive after months, sometimes years, of intrusive thoughts, anxiety or low mood that hasn't shifted with time or self-help. Some are stuck in compulsions they can't explain to people who haven't experienced OCD. Others are worn down by health anxiety, burnout or a difficult life transition. I work from a BABCP accredited, formulation-led approach, including ERP for OCD and trauma-focused CBT, mapping what's maintaining the difficulty before any exposure work begins. Clients move forward through structured, collaborative sessions, in West London or online, with skills that outlast therapy itself.

Individuals and couples come to me when they feel stuck, disconnected, or uncertain in their sexual and relational lives; often navigating shame, desire differences, body confusion, breakdowns in communication, or a sense that something deeper is not being met. Alongside this, many are also curious about expanding into more aliveness: intimacy, fantasy, kink, alternative relating, emotional honesty, and relational depth. My approach is grounded, somatic and relational where we move between difficulty and expansion, supporting greater embodiment, awareness, clarity, and the capacity to meet yourself and others more fully.

You may be struggling with anxiety, low mood, overthinking, low self-esteem or difficult experiences from your past that continue to affect you today. Perhaps you understand some of the reasons you feel this way, but knowing why hasn't been enough to change it. You don't need to have everything figured out before coming to therapy. We can start with what is happening for you now, understand what may be driving it, and work together towards meaningful and lasting change.

Hello and welcome to my profile page. I am a UKCP-registered clinical psychotherapist offering short and long-term therapy in Surrey and London. Most of my work is with clients experiencing depression, low mood or anxiety. I understand that the process of therapy may appear daunting and that the first steps take a lot of courage. I also believe we all possess the capacity to make new meaning of our lives and experiences to ease any distress we may experience.

My inspiration for this career stems from a desire to connect and communicate with people. This inclination has been a thread throughout my life. Having undertaken Counselling myself I have directly experienced the cathartic and powerful change it brings about. I work with both individuals and couples/relationships. Developing a trusting relationship and being aware of what happens between us is core to effective therapy. I work to understand the situation that you need support with and look at how this is impacting your life. I work with both individuals and couples/relationships, including those seeking focused Couples Therapy.

I work in 3 main ways: 1. Gently: I can help you begin a journey of understanding yourself and introduce you to therapy tools and get you back to feeling like you again. 2. We delve deeper, I can help you heal from a broken relationship either recent or long ago that is holding you back. You must be ready to do this deep work as you will release a lot of stored emotion. 3. I also work with young people (14-17yrs) helping them understand their emotions and teaching them tools and tricks to manage life. You choose which level you want to work at, but our discussions are wrapped with warmth, fun and need to know truths.

FAQ - About Neurdivergent Therapy
What does neurodivergent mean?
Neurodivergent is a broad term used to describe people whose brains process, learn, or respond to information in ways that differ from what is considered “typical.” Neurodivergence can include autism, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, Tourette syndrome, and other forms of neurological difference. The term comes from the idea of neurodiversity, which recognises that differences in brain function are a natural part of human variation. Rather than viewing neurodivergence only through the lens of neurological disorders, this perspective acknowledges that neurodivergent people may experience both strengths and challenges. For example, a person may be very creative and intelligent, while also needing support with sensory sensitivity or learning differences.

What issues do neurodivergent people commonly bring to therapy?
Neurodivergent people often seek therapy for many of the same reasons as anyone else, including anxiety, depression, stress, relationship concerns, or major life transitions. They may also want support with challenges specifically related to neurodivergence; for example, therapy may help with executive functioning, social communication, sensory sensitivity, school/learning stress, or the experience of feeling misunderstood in society. Therapists can also help individuals and families diagnose conditions, as well as distinguish regular challenges associated with childhood and/or adolescence from more enduring conditions. When needed, a therapist may also provide referrals to additional specialists, such as occupational therapists or psychiatrists who can prescribe psychiatric medication.

What therapeutic approaches work well for neurodivergent clients?
Therapy for neurodivergent clients is often most helpful when it is flexible and affirming. Rather than expecting every client to fit one standard model of therapy, neurodivergent-affirming therapists may adapt sessions to each person’s needs and therapy goals. Often, this includes visual aids, movement breaks, or other therapy supports. Common structured therapeutic approaches like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can be useful for some neurodivergent clients, but the approach may need to be modified to avoid feeling overly rigid or focused on changing traits that are part of a person’s natural neurodivergence. Other approaches, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and mindfulness-based approaches, may also be helpful depending on the client’s needs.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of neurodivergent therapists?
Psychology Today’s directory of neurodivergent therapists includes professionals who self-identify as neurodivergent, as well as therapists who describe their work as neurodivergent-affirming or who specialise in areas such as ADHD, autism, learning differences, or sensory processing concerns. When reviewing a therapist’s profile, look at their bio, listed specialties, treatment approach, and experience working with neurodivergent clients. You may also want to consider whether they offer supports that matter to you, such as online therapy, accessible office space, or familiarity with specific concerns like anxiety, depression, or trauma.
