Hello, my name is Dr Sonia Marquardt and I am a Chartered Counselling Psychologist. I offer individual psychological therapy to young people and adults who are looking for a professional to explore their difficulties with. I also offer couples therapy. Mental health affects all of us at some point in our lives. The last two years have been particularly challenging. Many of us have been affected in multiple ways by the covid pandemic and we may need some external support to manage feelings of stress, loneliness and isolation,
panic
and worry, and feeling low.

All of us, at some point in our lives, may experience challenges that could lead to
anxiety
and depression or ‘stuckness’. These feelings usually stem from not knowing how to communicate needs and emotions or process deeply stressful thoughts and experiences in a way that can bring relief. This is the time to reach out for therapy where you can learn (and unlearn) those behavioural patterns that stop you from becoming the best possible version of yourself. You can develop coping strategies that help you to become a happier and more fulfilled individual now and in the future.

I offer confidential and creative psychotherapy to individuals and couples. I work worldwide using Zoom, and in-person in London, UK. My clients usually arrive to work through a difficulty – including
anxiety
and depression, situations with relationships and sex, issues with alcohol or drugs, loss, recent or historic abuse, betrayal, self-esteem, anger, or a sense of being directionless or stuck. I respect the urgency of the situation – the need to find a way through – and the need for that way to be sustainable and authentic to who you are.

I have a special interest in mind-body therapies for treating trauma that has been stored in the body and manifests through
anxiety
or depression-related symptoms.
As a person-centred therapist I try to understand your reality (how the world works from your point of view) and support you to explore solutions to your problems. This will include increasing your self-awareness, improving your ability to use self-direction to make changes in your life, improving your self-esteem, and self-efficacy. In yoga therapy we focus on the integration of mind and body to enhance mental health. I draw on yogic principles and practices, such as physical yoga postures, meditation, breathing techniques, and relaxation exercises to provide both short and long term regulation for an imbalanced nervous system.

I work with adults, and young people, to overcome conditions like
panic
attacks,
anxiety
, depression and phobias.
In my experience every client comes to therapy with a unique set of life circumstances. Sometimes these contribute to personal and emotional problems which can feel overwhelming or even insurmountable. Often, it is at this point that a person reaches out for professional help. They may identify that low mood, negative thinking, stress or relationship problems are impediments to living a good life and they will want help to restore healthy self-esteem, confidence, balance and self-worth. Often clients are looking for a supportive, non-judgmental, compassionate and caring professional to guide them on their journey to wellbeing.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
