What do you need? It is sometimes helpful to ask yourself - "What are my main goals as I go for counselling? What is important to me right now? How would I like to change?" Often all someone needs is some quality time and space to be able to be themselves, and be heard - not feeling judged no matter what they say, and feel some compassion from somebody who cares. In the busy and sometimes harsh world in which we live, I provide that space for you to come as you are, work with your expressed goals, rediscover a new way forward, and deal with the problems you are experiencing. Often people find a positive change in this scenario.

I am an experienced psychotherapist in private practise, as well as teaching faculty on foundation and advanced counselling courses in Exeter, UK.
I firmly believe that we are fundamentally relational beings, ones that need security, understanding & care above all else. Real change comes not from trying to fix thinking patterns, self-concepts or the past, but in shifting relational dynamics in the here and now and finding new ways of being with another. This is what I focus on in therapy with my clients,

Something doesn’t feel right — and maybe it hasn’t for a long time. You might be carrying anxiety, grief, or trauma that keeps surfacing no matter how much you try to manage it. Or perhaps your mind works with an intensity that’s hard to explain — and you’ve spent a long time wondering why things feel so much bigger for you than they seem to for others. Maybe part of you wants to change, and another part is terrified of what that might mean. You don’t have to have it figured out to start.

You're holding everything together — work, relationships, responsibilities — and doing it well enough that nobody would guess the effort it actually takes. But privately something won't shift. The anxiety that appears for no obvious reason. The relationships that follow the same exhausting patterns. The flatness that success hasn't touched.
You've probably tried to address it. Got some tools, felt better for a while. But something underneath keeps reasserting itself — and you're right that it does.
I've spent 30 years helping people understand what's actually driving their experience, not just manage the symptoms.

Maybe you're experiencing a whole wave of different, overwhelming emotions, facing challenge after challenge and you're not sure how you'll get through this. FAQ - Therapist Gender
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
