Let's start where you are, which is usually - stuck, in some way. Stuck with a presentation, reaction, habit or situation you can't find a way around. Stuck with anxiety, grief, the illusion of control, the inevitability of uncertainty or the feeling of nothing changing. Stuck in relationships where you don't feel seen or heard, or in families where your role was decided for you long before you got a say in it. Stuck in your life stage with no clear path forward, stuck with the contents of your head which manifest in anxiety, depression and spiralling thoughts, stuck in your old habits and patterns which you can't seem to change.

Whether you are looking for couple therapy or individual, whatever troubles you…abuse, anxiety, low self-esteem, relationship issues, sex, sexuality and psychosexual issues, trauma, or any other issue…the first step back to well-being is to reach out for support. Perhaps a counselling relationship is what you need to help you through. Although family, close friends, and colleagues can offer valuable support, these very relationships can sometimes be barriers to exploring what you may be thinking or experiencing honestly and openly. This is where the therapeutic counselling relationship could help.

I offer counselling & expressive arts therapy from my home and online. During sessions with me you can explore your concerns confidentially. We will work together to help alleviate your current suffering. Therapy isn’t a magic pill to make all your problems go away, but it can make a considerable difference to how you deal with the challenges you are facing. It can free you from the negative cycles of overthinking, shame and help you to live a happier, more balanced life.

Life today seems to be overloaded by a variety of stress in many spheres of existence. What should be enjoyable and fulfilling sometimes turns out to be the very cause of suffering. In the midst of the busy-ness of life, we do not take the time to address this suffering and instead criticise and blame ourselves or others. This could potentially leave us feeling confused and ashamed. Shame does not heal the pain of suffering. Every human being has a need to be understood, accepted and validated because the human brain is wired to love and be loved.

I believe therapy can be a transformative experience. Whether you have recently been through a difficult or traumatic experience, are feeling lost, low, are struggling with negative self-image, or you just feel it may be helpful to have a space to untangle your thoughts and develop a deeper understanding of yourself, I can hold a safe and non-judgemental space for you. My work is integrative (meaning I draw from different therapy theories), and is client-centred, at your pace, gentle and compassionate.

Whatever issues you are facing right now, I offer a safe, confidential and judgement-free space in which we can reflect on them and, by better understanding your conflicts and experiences, grow in self-awareness and autonomy. I believe in the importance of building a trusting relationship with my clients, so that we can work together toward constructing meaningful relationships. Talking freely about whatever comes to mind is the main way to explore what is beyond our logical, rational mind.

Do you feel like: your mind is constantly racing with anxious thoughts, do you replay conversations, and feel like you just can't relax? Or perhaps you feel exhausted, disconnected and like you're just trying to keep it all together. If this sounds familiar you're not alone. Many people come to sessions feeling this way. Sessions with me are rooted in compassion, curiosity and are a collaboration. I will work with you towards the change you'd like to see. The combination of talking therapy and art therapy, for which no experience of art-making is necessary, can support you in creating lasting change.

You are probably feeling very upset, alone and confused, maybe even ashamed and wondering if counselling could help? Everyone who comes to therapy has a unique set of issues but the underlying need to share the distress and be understood, is true for everyone. If you are struggling with parenting, postnatal depression, miscarriage or your identity during a life transition, you are not alone. I have lots of experience working with women (and men) who are struggling with life and want to feel better than they currently do. I also help younger people and teens who may have self esteem issues, feel sad, anxious or be self harming.

I am interested in helping women understand how their inner and outer worlds interact and how the experience of being female in a patriarchal society shapes our emotional lives. If there a specific life event or relationship you would like to address, or painful experiences in your past that you need to safely talk through or you find yourself feeling unhappy, anxious or stuck, I may be able to help.

I work with a wide range of diverse needs and people, but particularly those struggling with anxiety, self-doubt, poor self-esteem and the feeling that they are just not good enough. Many of the people I work with find themselves feeling constantly anxious - worrying about what other people think of them, trying to keep everyone happy or believing they are flawed and not good enough. They are often exhausted and frustrated that they can't find a way to break free from this.

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?
Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realised.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?
Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
