Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Counselling in Pulborough
Although most of my clients have anxiety, depression or OCD, because of my medical background, I also tend to see many people with health anxiety, work-related stress and those who are living with long-term medical conditions.
Hi. I'm Dr. Liz Saunders. I'm a qualified doctor and CBT therapist working in West Sussex. I originally trained as a Psychiatrist and I have been working with people with emotional problems for 20 years. I have extensive experience in using CBT for many different types of problems and with people of all ages, however, many of my clients are young people who are struggling with anxiety or confidence issues at college, university or work or with difficult interpersonal relationships. I have a particular interest in helping young people to reach their full potential academically and professionally and in their lives more generally.

Life is challenging for all of us. Sometimes we hit a trigger and we feel in crisis. Often talking to friends and family is difficult, yet we still need a safe, confidential space to off load our feelings. Counselling gives us that time and space to explore our feelings, free from any judgement. It helps to build resilience and to identify any negative behaviour and thought patterns that may be making life more difficult for us. It helps us to develop a greater self awareness of what is working and not working for us in both personal and professional relationships. It doesn't solve everything but it helps to give a greater choice.

I offer counselling & expressive arts therapy from my home and online.
During sessions with me you can explore your concerns confidentially. We will work together to help alleviate your current suffering. Therapy isn’t a magic pill to make all your problems go away, but it can make a considerable difference to how you deal with the challenges you are facing. It can free you from the negative cycles of overthinking, shame and help you to live a happier, more balanced life.

Life today seems to be overloaded by a variety of stress in many spheres of existence. What should be enjoyable and fulfilling sometimes turns out to be the very cause of suffering. In the midst of the busy-ness of life, we do not take the time to address this suffering and instead criticise and blame ourselves or others. This could potentially leave us feeling confused and ashamed. Shame does not heal the pain of suffering. Every human being has a need to be understood, accepted and validated because the human brain is wired to love and be loved.

If you’re feeling trapped by anxiety, OCD, or self-doubt, you’re not alone.
For OCD, I use ERP to help face fears safely and ACT to build tolerance to uncertainty—so intrusive thoughts lose their power. If you struggle with perfectionism or self-doubt, you’re not alone. These patterns often stem from deep-rooted experiences. Through inner child work, we’ll heal past wounds, rebuild confidence, and create a healthier version of you.

How long does OCD treatment take?
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.
What happens if OCD is not treated?
Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.
Are there medications for OCD?
Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine, fluoxetine, and sertraline, among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.
Can OCD come back after treatment?
Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
