Is therapy right for you, right now? Perhaps you don't know, and that's okay. Maybe you're feeling anxious or depressed and just need someone to listen. I have a UKCP registered MA/Adv.Diploma in Integrative Psychotherapy and BACP Accredited Diploma in Integrative Counselling with over 7 years clinical experience. I also offer low-cost relational-embodied supervision for counsellors and psychotherapists — both in training and post-qualification as trainee in the Diploma in Integrative Supervision at the Minster Centre (accredited by UKCP). This is also available to those in pastoral care roles, eg. teachers.

I work as an integrative psychotherapist, drawing on both an existential phenomenological approach (focusing on lived experience and themes such as choice, meaning, and responsibility) and a psychodynamic perspective (which explores how early relationships shape present experience and future possibilities).

I work with both children and adults, and have a strong interest in supporting those who have experienced complex or relational trauma, with or without self-harming or suicidal behaviour. I work with a range of mental health difficulties, including anxiety and depression. I also support couples experiencing challenges in their relationship, helping them understand the emotional conflicts that leave the relationship strained or at risk of ending without support. There is no one-size-fits-all therapeutic approach, so I place importance on developing a shared understanding of the core emotional issues that affect you.

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy gives space for all of these and much more, as patient and therapist slowly work to develop an understanding of the patient and those parts of themselves that may be hidden from view.
My first priority is to offer a safe non-judgemental space, which fully recognises the challenges of opening up to a stranger and the building of trust. The pace of work is set by the patient, although as I am training within the field of psychoanalytic psychotherapy I will offer gentle encouragement to consider dreams, early life, and unconscious processes.

More often than not, the roots of emotional problems go deeper than normal awareness can reach, and my role is to enable you to identify, and focus on, some of the destructive ways of relating to yourself and others that might leave you feeling depressed, anxious or alone. Together, we will create a safe and creative environment, which will help you to explore the different aspects of yourself – some which harmoniously coexist, and others that are at odds with each other.

Some people seek psychotherapy and counselling because of a quiet desire for something more, some because of an absence of joy and liveliness, some feel a lingering sadness, some find themselves in shallow relationships, some are suffering the pains of depression, anxiety or anger, some feel close to madness, some are curious to take a closer look at the riches within.

I am trained in a number of therapeutic approaches, including psychoanalytic, humanistic and existential-phenomenological, with an emphasis on existential-phenomenological psychotherapy.
I offer a grounding, non-judgemental and consistent space where we can explore experiences, emotions and parts of yourself that may feel too painful or difficult to share elsewhere. Through a collaborative process, we work together to deepen your understanding of who you are and how your experiences have shaped you. I believe our struggles do not appear in isolation; they are often rooted in the relationships, experiences and circumstances we have lived through. Through a trusting therapeutic relationship, we can begin to make sense of your experiences together and identify what you might need to move forward.

Psychoanalytic Counsellors
Does psychoanalytic therapy work?
Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviours. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.
How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?
Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behaviour is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.
Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?
Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.
Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?
Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
