Dialectical Behaviour (DBT) Counselling in Portslade
It can be really unsettling to deal with negative emotions by ourselves and to not know what we can do to help ourselves to feel better. I have been guiding clients for 16 years to achieve a resilient emotional stability and a more balanced sense of self-worth.

My main focus is always on creating a safe therapeutic relationship where we can think creatively together about the difficulties you might be facing. I particularly enjoy working with neurodivergent young people and adults, exploring together how they experience the world. I work predominantly from a trauma-informed perspective and a lot of my work with neurodivergent families focusses on the parent-child relationship.

Are you stuck in familiar patterns? Or feeling disconnected from your own life? Therapy offers a way to understand what’s underneath it, and to change it.
I’m Tim and over the past fifteen years, I have helped individuals navigate challenges like anxiety, ADHD, and addictive behaviours, often exploring how these may be linked to deeper, unresolved experiences or trauma.
I work in an active and deeply curious way. Rather than relying solely on passive reflection, we will collaborate to gently challenge established patterns and help you regain control of your future.

I specialise in helping people with long-standing trauma and anxiety, who feel stuck in patterns of intrusive thoughts, persistent worries, self-criticism, and regret. Often, there are multiple overlapping difficulties that have affected identity, confidence, relationships, or daily life. I work with people who benefit from longer-term therapy, consistent appointments, and an individualised treatment plan that may involve one therapeutic approach or a carefully integrated combination of therapies. So, if previous therapy didn't brought the change you hoped, if you've felt unheard and unseen, you may be exactly who I work best with.

My ideal client feels "stuck", either literally behind the wheel or figuratively in life. You might feel your world shrinking due to driving anxiety, motorway panic, or trauma from a past accident. You want to reclaim your independence and confidence, but the fear feels too heavy to navigate alone. You are looking for a therapist who understands that how we navigate the road often reflects how we navigate life. You need a safe, non-judgmental environment where you can finally feel back in the driver’s seat.

I've trained in DBT which helps with creating a better relationship with emotions and managing self-destructive behaviours.
I work with individuals aged 16+ who may be coming to terms with the realisation that something in their life is not working for them, it's working against them. They want to come to terms with it and/or work on changing it. This could be a combination of issues. A past experience, identity issues, overwhelming emotions or relationship struggles to name a few. They want to live a life that aligns with them better, be present in their lives and gain resilience if life becomes difficult again. Therapy offers the possibility for this.

Dialectical Behaviour (DBT) Counsellors
Who is DBT for?
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.
Why do people need DBT?
The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behaviour and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.
What happens in DBT?
Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behaviour, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.
How long does DBT last?
Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioural change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behaviour; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
