There are times when feelings such as Anxiety, Depression, Low Self-esteem, Trauma and Loss can start to feel overwhelming.
I provide a safe and nonjudgemental environment to explore and process difficult thoughts and feelings. No feelings are wrong, but sometimes they can lead us to make unhelpful choices. By using a wide range of therapies and a trusting relationship between clients and myself, positive ways forward can be achieved.

Although I have extensive experience with depression, anxiety and addiction, I work with people, not just their problems.
As a person-centred practitioner, I believe the potential to grow and develop is inherent within all human beings and that the relationships we develop and maintain can either hinder this process or empower it. I endeavour to co-create relationships which empower and inspire personal growth.

I feel very passionately about the positive effect that therapy can have upon peoples lives. Over the years I’ve worked with a range of challenges that people can experience. Working through pain or difficulties together is a process I find very rewarding. Often people will arrive being unsure what to expect and feeling apprehensive about what is to come. My approach is to create a welcoming, warm and confidential space where together we can gain an understanding of your situation. I am trained to draw from several therapeutic models so we can find a way forward that suits your preferences and goals for change.

Thank you very much for visiting my page. I am a Person Centred counsellor based in Seaford and I rent a room in the town centre. I aim to offer a safe place which is free of judgement and a positive atmosphere where we can explore whatever you may wish to bring to each session. In return I’ll also offer honesty and transparency to help build our relationship. I endeavour to work with you as an individual and not just on an individual problem. A personal favourite analogy of mine is “I will attempt to put your shoes on and walk with you but I won’t do up the laces”.

Hello! I'm Richard. You may have arrived here as you may be experiencing some distress or navigating a specific struggle and are hoping to find some clarity in what’s going on for you. We all experience difficulties occasionally and life can be challenging sometimes. Finding a therapist that is right for you is key, particularly because mutually nourishing relationships with others are essential for your emotional wellbeing. It is normal and healthy to seek support because we don’t have to face any issue alone. It’s okay to want to find the missing piece of your puzzle.

Over the years, this is what I have heard from many of my clients: - they want to feel less anxious - they want to worry less about what people think about them - they want to improve their relationships - they want to feel comfortable saying no - they want to talk through their grief so they can enjoy life again - they want to work out why they feel so angry - they want to cope with life better.
Counselling isn't just for big life problems or traumas, it's also for everyday struggles, and it can have a positive impact on our lives and all of our relationships. I have many years experience of counselling clients on a one-to-one basis - my specialist areas are listed below.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
