I have been working in this field for over twenty years now and I still have a determined passion for it. I am trusted to hear the life narratives and difficulties of those seeking support and my aim is to help you feel heard and empowered. I have never lost sight of this aim. I have worked with people who have felt very isolated by their own thoughts, felt intense shame, and struggled to cope with overwhelming feelings. Usually they have not felt able to talk to those around them for fear of judgment, embarrassment or rejection. I feel privileged to have been trusted by my clients which enables me to help lessen their burden.

I work with adults, young people (14+) and welcome autistic and ADHD clients, formally or self-diagnosed.
Life can be hard at times. We can experience loss, changes in our health, family circumstances or work life. Maybe our relationships are not fulfilling our needs and we do not know how to change things. At times, we don’t feel good about ourselves, we lose confidence in our ability to cope with life or maybe we feel impacted by past experiences or held back through feelings of anger, shame or guilt. Sometimes we don’t know what’s wrong, but we just know something isn’t right. I can help you explore what is going on for you by giving you a supportive space to talk and be heard.

Hiya, I'm Paul, a Gestalt Psychotherapist. You are doubtless here because you need affirming support. Gestalt is wonderful as it respects a person's symptoms as creative adjustments rather than illnesses. Your life is always in process and living it is all that's needed to maintain its flow; one way you may not be doing this is by telling yourself, or having been told by others how you should do this. This won't help your sense of self but lose sight of how and what you are. I will work with you to make you feel safe, understood and validated so that through the simple experience of being you do not seek to be what you are not.

I’ve worked closely with young people, those with autism, trauma and anxiety.
Counselling is an opportunity to be heard, to share with a trained person some of the difficulties that you encounter and to be supported to make positive changes to your life. I work in a respectful, empathic, understanding and compassionate way, providing a confidential, non-judgmental space to explore your thoughts, emotions and experiences. By reflecting on these experiences you can learn new ways of doing things and progress past what you feel is holding you back or causing you difficulty. I currently work from a comfortable and private space that is used solely for client sessions, online via video call or outdoors.

Heal Haven Therapy
Psychologist, GMBPsS
Malton YO17
Emotional and psychological difficulties can occur at any time and often more than once, and can be co-occurring. Evidence suggests anxiety and depression is more prevalent in neuro-divergency. Therapy is available for all young people whether or not there is a neuro-divergency. CBT relies on collaboration, does not aim to ‘change’ a person’s way of thinking but helps in identifying more supportive thinking styles. At Heal Haven Therapy, CBT sessions will be neuro-affirming (adapted where necessary), trauma-informed, and from a qualified, specialist practitioner. Sessions can be online or in person (Malton).

You want change. You want answers. You want understanding. First of all, good on you for getting to this point! I have been there myself and know the days/weeks/months of inner dialog you have to get past before putting therapy in action. You might be worrying you will be "too much" or "not enough" for your therapist. I want you to know, ALL of you is welcome here! I'm not here to judge, I'm here to be by your side through this. If you are struggling in life, be that with; yourself, loved ones, colleagues or strangers, then I'd love you to get in touch!

I am also neurodivergent and work with many adults with late diagnosis of Autism and other related processing differences.
I am a person-centred counsellor and supervisor and have been working with people seeking change for many years. I have never yet come across anyone who's distress or anxiety or sadness didn't make sense in the context of their life experience. Every individual is different and special in my book but has in common the need to be heard, recognised, valued and understood. Those four things are at the heart of my practice. Whatever your concern or difficulty, sharing what is on your mind and in your heart in a safe space is the start of healing and self acceptance. I work online and by phone as well as face to face.

Welcome to my profile and thank you for stopping by. I’m guessing you’re here because you think it might be time to tackle your problems... you're tired of how things are and it's time for positive change. Having worked therapeutically with people since 1999, I have lots of experience of treating a whole range of issues, and have supported many people to achieve the health and well-being they always dreamed of. Sometimes it’s hard to believe that change is possible, particularly if the problem’s been around for a long time. I’m here to tell you that, with our mutual hard work and dedication, it really is within your reach.

What is the most effective treatment for autism?
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has come to be considered the standard treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder, and research has confirmed its effectiveness for many children. Therapists trained in ABA techniques work with children (and their parents) on developing social skills, communication and learning abilities, and everyday habits of hygiene and grooming. The clinician will tailor their program to the child’s particular need but the overarching goal will be to help them advance as far as possible toward independence based on their level of symptoms and decrease the need for additional special services. Families should seek a mental health professional specifically trained in ABA, and holding special certification in the technique, who has extensive experience not only with the approach but in using it with children with the same level of symptoms as the child who needs care.

How does ABA work?
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) sessions, which typically focus on positive reinforcement, can be intensive, lasting two or more hours several times a week, and continuing for two years or more. Therapists can also be expected to ask parents to take an active role in reinforcing lessons. Research has found that the technique can lead to major improvements that decrease the need for additional special services.

How does treatment for autism work?
Therapy sessions based on Applied Behavior Analysis will likely be frequent, intensive, and highly structured. After a thorough assessment, a therapist will help a child understand and develop skills in a range of areas, including communication, motor skills, social skills, self-care, play, and academic skills, as well as routines of daily living like hygiene. Typically, the therapist will help a child break down the components of a behavior—often referred to as the antecedent (what prompts an action), the behavior, and the consequence(what immediately follows)—and then reward the child at every step, while also asking parents to reinforce the lessons, and the rewards, throughout the day. This core therapy may be supplemented by occupational or speech therapy, and antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anticonvulsants may be prescribed to address specific severe symptoms.

How long does therapy for autism take?
Some people with autism spectrum disorder may be engaged in some level of therapy for many years, but research shows that treatment will be most effective if it is begun early and delivered intensively. When therapy begins by age 3, children tend to be better able to grasp and adopt the skills needed to manage everyday life, including attending school and establishing social relationships. This type of early-intervention treatment regimen is highly structured, typically involving 20 to 40 hours of one-on-one therapy per week, along with additional hours of engagement managed by parents, for a period of two years or more, although the duration of treatment is dependent on the child’s level of symptoms and pace of progress.
