Counselling therapy can help support you with many difficulties you may be facing, which are causing anxiety, low mood, low self worth. By working together we can explore the roots of the issues, bring understanding to the here and now, maintain tools and techniques moving forward to attain the goals you wish to achieve. Many clients seek therapy to have a better understanding of themselves, with this knowledge comes power to unearth thoughts, feeling and emotions that may have been masked.

Choosing a therapist can be daunting, especially when you may be feeling confused, depressed, anxious or at a low point. Or maybe you're thinking how can anyone understand? If you’ve had no experience of working with a counsellor, or previous counselling wasn't what you were expecting or ready to continue, I understand this can be difficult.

It can be scary making the first steps to looking for a counsellor and it also takes a lot of strength and bravery. Sometimes life events can leave us with a feeling of being stuck. This could be because of fear, anxiety, stress or underlying trauma that prevents you from finding the strength to move forward and heal. I believe by being able to learn to connect back to our feelings and our true selves, learning to listen and trust ourselves will not only help us understand who we are but also what we want and deserve which is to be loved, valued and happy.

Clients access therapy for a multitude of reasons; there may be difficulties at work, challenges in a relationship or a client may have been abused spanning a number of years. My hope with therapy is to explore the roots of issues, to rediscover our innate resilience, to build self-esteem and to help you meet your goals, your hopes, your wishes. Many people access therapy because they want to feel different, to change the emotions they are experiencing, or for others it may be learning to access those feelings that have perhaps been locked away through trauma.

Sexual Abuse Counsellors

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
