While not viewing diagnostic categories as the most helpful way of understanding these difficulties, I have worked successfully with people who identify with, or have been labelled with: BPD/EUPD, ADHD,
ODD
, PTSD, CPTSD, OCD, LD, ASD, anxiety, depression & body dysmorphia.
I am a registered psychologist and doctor of counselling psychology offering psychotherapy underpinned by a contemporary reading of the most relevant literature. I work from an attachment, psychodynamic and cognitive behavioural perspective, integrating these to offer tailored ways of understanding and working with issues that will be unique to each person and set of circumstances. Most of the work happens in the room, though sometimes we might also set things outside of it, where appropriate.

I provide a range of evidence based psychotherapies to alleviate psychological distress in Devon, my main approach being Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP). Intensive Short term Dynamic Psychotherapy is a highly effective form of psychodynamic psychotherapy designed to help you get to the heart of the matter quickly, and resolve issues fast. The approach is emotion focussed; a relational therapy that can address a wide range of ongoing problems or symptoms. ISTDP is particularly useful in attending to internal conflicts that can arise from interpersonal relationships.

"You, yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection". (Siddhartha Gautama). I work with couples and individuals to help foster and understanding and self awareness, which can lead to choices and paths that may not otherwise be seen. I endeavour to help people find their true voice and inner worth that doesn't rely on outside influences and factors, but can remain strong and in balance - not matter what life has in store. In my work with couples, I try to foster a positive atmosphere that recognises the many external and historical factors that can distort even the best of relationships.

What do you need to get your life on track, to feel fulfilled, relevant, in control and in the drivers seat? Sometimes we just need a bit of support to get there, an outside eye, a gentle challenge. We always need, and deserve to be treated with sensitivity, respect and dignity. Life is full of challenges, but you don't need to face them alone. Letting someone in can be scary, but you really do deserve to be supported, and you have every right to live a fulfilling, rich and creative life.

People come to therapy for many different and important reasons. For some it is to discuss difficult and emotional experiences, while for others its to have a space in their week to reflect and make time to check-in with themselves. I ask all my clients to come with an open-mind as therapy can take you on a journey of self-discovery. I have worked with many clients with varying degrees of personal difficulties; severe and mild distress including depression, anxiety, suicide, low-self-esteem, earlier life trauma, PTSD, relational difficulties and many more.

There are many reasons for seeking out therapy, although we often associate counselling with trauma, loss or coming to terms with difficult events or emotions. Sometimes we may feel 'stuck', replaying events in our mind or even in our relationships. By exploring our story in a safe, confidential space, we can unpick what's holding us back, process, heal and move towards acceptance. At times we may experience a general feeling of dissatisfaction we don't understand. Life isn't so bad so we 'shouldn't' feel this way, should we? We twist ourselves out of shape to live up to the ideals of others. We lose touch with our authentic self.

I work with individuals (adults, adolescents and children of all ages), couples, families and groups, who bring with them a range of life’s problems, challenges and possibilities. My aim is to encourage a deeper sense of self-awareness whilst focusing on the individual’s whole experience of life (behaviour, thoughts and feelings). Some clients bring specific issues to therapy: depression, anxiety, stress, sexual abuse, low self-esteem, relationship issues, eating disorders, low self-confidence, loss, unhappiness with work, home or life in general. I have an interest and experience working with people who have expereinced trauma.

Oppositional Defiance (ODD) Counsellors
What is the most effective treatment for oppositional defiant disorder?
The treatment of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) will involve multiple approaches designed to help both the youngster and their parents, sometimes including medication. A therapist will help a child learn ways to regulate their emotions, curb their impulsiveness, and counteract anger, defiance, and disruption, while showing parents ways to bring these lessons into their home. A technique designed for children with conditions like ODD, known as Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS), may also be used. CPS addresses a child’s concerns and rewards appropriate responses while discouraging harsh punishment or criticism.
How does treatment for oppositional defiant disorder work?
Treatment for ODD addresses the issues underlying a child’s defiance and disruption, the emotional regulation and impulse-control skills they lack, and the way adults respond to them. ODD therapy is based on the idea that children with the disorder understand the difference between right and wrong, that they want to behave well, and that, with help, they can. By responding to the child with empathy instead of harsh criticism, ignoring nonviolent behaviors, and rewarding positive actions, a therapist, and the other adults in a child’s life, can help children improve their behavior.
How long does therapy for oppositional defiant disorder take?
Therapy for oppositional defiant disorder is not a short-term undertaking. Depending on the severity of a child’s symptoms, their age, the presence of other conditions like ADHD, anxiety or a mood disorder, and their family dynamic, it can take months before improvement is noted. The cooperation of parents and teachers is crucial, because the skills learned in therapy must be practiced in real-world situations, with all their potential triggers.
Does oppositional defiant disorder go away?
ODD can remit following treatment. ODD is often diagnosed in nursery school, and early intervention is essential for a positive prognosis. In two-thirds of children, according to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, symptoms resolve within three years.
