If you are suffering from symptoms related to PTSD or complex PTSD, EMDR therapy can help to alleviate your symptoms. Clients working with me using EMDR have found that their symptoms such as flashbacks and/or being unable to go to certain places can be alleviated or reduced to the point where they are manageable. This work is supported with self help techniques to manage new anxieties as and when they may present themselves, but from a new and more adaptive perspective. I also offer the Safe and Sound Protocol alongside therapy sessions for those clients who wish to work in a polyvagal informed way.

Therapy approaches are often ‘integrated’ to suit an individual’s needs. Just as each person is different, so are their needs. Therefore, we can begin with an initial consultation meeting to understand together what you are going through and what would be helpful to you. I invite you to contact me by telephone or email to talk and find a convenient time.

Marcelo integrates Gestalt therapy, Existential Phenomenology and EMDR into his practice, offering an integrative and tailored approach that addresses issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, self-esteem, identity, sexuality, relationships, career transitions, and workplace stress.
Many people come to therapy during times of burnout, loss, identity transition or emotional pain. When we feel stuck, disconnected or overwhelmed, these are often signs that something deeper is asking to be heard. By creating a space where your experience can be reflected on with care and honesty, I aim to support individuals and couples in reconnecting with clarity, agency and meaning in their lives.
My work is informed by my doctoral research on occupational burnout in gay men, which explored how gender, sexuality and workplace dynamics shape our emotional wellbeing and burnout recovery.

Instead, it provides another way of expressing and making sense of your thoughts and feelings, especially when words alone don't seem enough. Using art materials can help you explore emotions, memories, and experiences from a different perspective, often leading to new insights, deeper understanding.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
