Life can be hard at times; work can be stressful, relationships challenging and circumstances in the past and present can all affect our emotional health. Perhaps you struggle with anxiety or low mood or
self esteem
, or a life event has knocked you off course. When we're struggling it can be really helpful to speak with someone outside of our family and friends who can gently help you understand the why behind your feelings and behaviour; and offer the hope of change.

Within my counselling profession, I have worked with adults and young people who have faced difficulties from substance abuse, mental/physical/sexual abuse, self-esteem, depression and relationship issues. However, my work is not specific to these issues alone. Prior to, during and after my training, I worked within the health, social and criminal justice sector. For nearly five years I have worked with organisations specialising in the rehabilitation of drug and alcohol users and prolific offenders. I currently support children, young people and their families who are facing domestic and social difficulties.

I work with a range of clients who are exploring questions of meaning and identity and seeking ways to live a more fulfilling life. Many of the clients who come to me are feeling overwhelmed and are looking to make changes in their lives, but do not know where to start and often have never had enough emotional support or space in which to explore their process and the recurring patterns in their life. Together, we work to understand issues such as anxiety, depression, a lack of motivation, authenticity, loss, or low self-esteem and look for a path to healing and growth.

I have experience with clients with issues such as: anxiety, depression, work place stress, low
self esteem
/image/confidence, bullying, loneliness, bereavement, childhood sexual, emotional and physical abuse, abandonment, relationship issues, living with a Narcissistic parent/partner, menopause, women's issues, anger issues, ill health.
Hello and welcome. We all have times when we need some emotional support. You may be feeling sad, anxious, low, or confused or finding it hard to organise your thoughts. You may feel that you may be judged if you talk about what you are thinking and feeling. It may seem as though you are all alone with overwhelming worries, unable to focus on anything or anyone else, or that things just don't feel the same for you any more.

Finding the right therapist for you is as much about their style and personality as their qualifications. I value warmth, collaboration, and humour when appropriate and I endeavour to bring these qualities to my practice. My work is integrative which means I can use different theories to suit each individual client's needs. I draw on relational psychoanalysis, attachment theory, Internal Family systems, ACT and humanistic approaches. I am also influenced by my interest in film and literature. I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

In therapy we work out what needs to change so you can feel happier in yourself and in your relationships . We find the tools you need to deal with what's happening now and the space to explore your past and what you want for your future. When we don't change what feels wrong it doesn't just go away. Sometimes it feels so difficult or confusing we don't even know where to start. Getting some help is a start.

Our minds can be confusing places at times. Especially when it comes to issues of mental health. It may feel hard to talk about certain things with friends and loved ones for many reasons, and it can feel like there’s no way to escape these problems. I can offer you a safe, confidential space to help you make more sense of your situation, help you throw your problems into a new light and perhaps give you a new perspective on what’s going on for you. I work in a holistic way, which takes into account you as a whole person and not just a problem that needs to be treated.

When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?
When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.
What are the signs of low self-esteem?
Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.
What causes low self-esteem?
Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.
How can therapy improve self-esteem?
Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
