I help people understand themselves, each other, and the relationships that matter most. Relationships have a profound impact on our wellbeing. As human beings, we are made to relate – to connect, to grow together and to learn from one another. When our relationships are supportive, they can bring warmth, joy and a deep sense of belonging. When they become strained, they can leave us feeling hurt, misunderstood and alone. Counselling offers the opportunity to slow things down, step back from familiar patterns, and begin to understand what is happening beneath the surface.

My practise is shaped around the person in front of me. I work pluralistically - i.e. I hold the belief that no single theoretical model can meet the full range of what clients bring into the room. I will use tools from many frameworks rather than applying one framework uniformly across every client. The clients I work with most often present with a particular issue they want to work on. I prioritise collaboration; checking in with you about what it and isn't helping, and adjusting my approach as our therapeutic relationship develops.

I see clients from across all ages, ethnicities and with an extremely wide range of issues. I help clients to come to grips with substance abuse, depression, all forms of anxiety and much more besides. I help my clients to summon the strength to put their issues behind them. I help them to find new ways of feeling, thinking and behaving. Whatever their goals might be, I help them to realise that they're strong enough, good enough and able to achieve them. I particularly specialise in working with clients on the high functioning end of the autistic spectrum.

Anxiety has a way of shaping more of your life than you'd like. For some people it looks like panic or physical sensations. For others it's never feeling good enough, holding back in relationships, going quiet when they'd want to speak up, or pushing through everything until they're exhausted. People come to me thinking something is wrong with them, when actually fear has just taken over.

Early school refusal, before it entrenches. Anxiety, before it needs a diagnosis. Friendship trouble, before it becomes isolation. Low confidence, before it hardens into who they think they are. I catch these early. I'm a child emotion specialist and published children's author, working with children and teens aged 7 to 17 building a child's self-awareness and helping them move forward from big emotions.

Are you baffled by your relationship with a narcissist? Are you exhausted by the mind games, gaslighting, and deceit? Have your friends grown tired of hearing you talk about the same issues? Don't worry, you're not alone. Narcissistic abuse is real and NOT all therapists get it. Narcs are sly, conniving, and incredibly devious. Until you've experienced their abuse, it's hard to understand. This often leads to victims feeling increasingly isolated, which exacerbates the narcissist's control and creates fertile ground for further abuse. It's no wonder such relationships compromise your sanity.

Neuro-Linguistic (NLP) Counsellors
How does neuro-linguistic programming work?
A therapist using Neuro-linguistic programming might start by building a strong rapport and gathering information about the client’s objectives and any problem areas. Then the NLP therapist will employ NLP techniques to guide their client toward healthier thoughts and behaviours. Clients will learn how to better manage their moods and hone their communication skills. NLP will conclude with the therapist and client making a plan for how to integrate the positive changes into their daily life in the future.

What are some techniques used in neuro-linguistic programming?
NLP therapists often employ anchoring, so the client begins to automatically associate their trigger with a healthier response. Clients also learn how to reframe a situation to change the way they react to it for the better, and how to replace the negative beliefs that are holding them back. Many NLP clients practice visualisation or forming a mental image of themselves attaining their goals. Every NLP therapist will have their own preferred approach with specific techniques that they have found to be helpful for their clients.

How long does neuro-linguistic programming take?
Since neuro-linguistic programming is not regulated, the length of treatment can vary greatly. Some therapists may only use NLP in a single session, while others may employ it over the course of weeks, months, or even years. It depends greatly on the type and severity of the problem being treated, as well as the individual client’s response to NLP treatment.

Is neuro-linguistic programming evidence-based?
While some people may find neuro-linguistic programming helpful, either in therapy or in their career or personal development, the science behind this approach is inconclusive. Most of the available studies are small in scale and have produced mixed results, and the commercial nature of NLP lends itself to conflicts of interest. More research is needed. In the meantime, practitioners must use their best judgment of whether NLP techniques will be helpful in meeting their clients’ individual needs.
