I work with couples as a treatment for depression, where we explore difficulties and work with practical tools to rebuild your relationship .
You may feel like you’re stuck in repetitive cycles of unwanted thoughts and feelings. You may find that this stops you from going out of your comfort zone and stops you from connecting to the people that are important to you. From the outside it may look like you're keeping it all together but on the inside you feel trapped. With 15 years experience of working in mental health I aim to support you to unlock your potential through becoming more self-aware. I provide a safe, respectful and supportive space for you to identify your specific needs, explore issues and work through your difficulties.

My specialisms include addiction, anxiety, depression, bereavement, relationship problems, self esteem, identity and trauma.
I offer counselling and therapeutic coaching. Clients will come to me with a range of problems and often feel confused and simply need to talk. In our work we will clarify the problem and see what is most challenging for you at the present time. We will discover where this confusion arises in the body and mind and begin to understand where it began: Perhaps this has been triggered in the past: by an environment, people, a person, upbringing etc. The work we do is non-judgemental and kind. My purpose is to help you find your way out of the confusion and suffering, so you can find purpose, meaning and peace in your life.

You may be coming to counselling because you are in crisis, unable to see a way through a situation or feeling lost or alone. You might be seeking the 'right' answer around a difficult life decision. It may have taken many years to find the courage to seek help for issues which run deep, perhaps stemming from difficult, early experiences in childhood or from trauma. I specialise in working with self esteem and anxiety, relationship issues, and LGBTQ+ folks, however, everybody is welcome.

I work with people who feel ready to address some kind of dis-ease in their lives, whether that is an anxiety, addiction, relationship question or stress-related physical pain. Many of these issues take time to address properly although people often experience relief relatively quickly. I worked as a teacher before becoming a psychotherapist, and still like the Greek word for teaching: pedagogy, which has at its heart the idea of accompanying. I accompany people in-person and online, on their journey; I rarely offer advice but work with people to help them understand themselves, what they want, and the best way forward for them.

I enjoy working with creative people, couples , people that try to find different directions in life and people suffering from interpersonal dilemmas and want to learn more about how they arise.
I provide focused therapy that will help you to see your patterns and emotions as well as moral and ethical challenges arising from interpersonal and social contexts better, to then allow you to change them. Obstacles to change are very subtle, often almost invisible. Self-awareness can redirect your energies to creating more positive states of mind. We will work on how ethical and moral dilemmas arise between people, how this interacts with different life experiences that impact your personality and how that then affects your psychological well being.

I utilise a blend of positive psychotherapeutic enquiry and solution focussed approaches, to identify and reframe the cause of limiting beliefs and behaviours. I tailor my approach and work with individuals and couples . Whether you need to overcome a traumatic experience, difficulties in relationships, self esteem, anxiety or coaching to provide skills to transition through life, manage a situation or perform at your best. Building an independent, safe and trusting environment for you to explore issues and challenges in life: both work and/or personal is important for me.

I worked with clients who had depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and some who suffered from childhood trauma, childhood sexual abuse, and relationship problems. Some clients just needed to talk about a specific issue for the short term, and some preferred to have longer-term counselling to address underlying aspects of their personality. It's a journey to understand the self, and perhaps this understanding can make things move forward and incite a change

Couples Counselling

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
