You may have been considering therapy for a while but are hesitating or perhaps you've had previous experience and need something more. You feel something is not right but it is hard to think about or put into words? Living with high levels of anxiety , shame or fear for a prolonged period, can negatively affect the way we perceive ourselves and others. So with a compassionate approach, I work with most psychological difficulties, and have a special interest in anxiety and low mood, problematic family relationships, parenting and bereavement. I also work extensively with adolescents and welcome working with those of 16+years.

I have supported clients going through a range of problems, with a lot of experience working with: anxiety , depression, relationship troubles both platonic and romantic, self-esteem and bereavement.
Our minds can be confusing places at times. Especially when it comes to issues of mental health. It may feel hard to talk about certain things with friends and loved ones for many reasons, and it can feel like there’s no way to escape these problems. I can offer you a safe, confidential space to help you make more sense of your situation, help you throw your problems into a new light and perhaps give you a new perspective on what’s going on for you. I work in a holistic way, which takes into account you as a whole person and not just a problem that needs to be treated.

I am a clinically trained psychotherapist. I can help you with anxiety , trauma, depression, addiction, and many other psychological problems. I work with your psyche's strengths and struggles, to help empower you to heal, gain trust, compassion, and deep understanding within yourself. I do this mainly through guiding you to find agreement, clarity, and build trust within yourself. In this work it is surprising how gaining an understanding of yourself and the underlying traumas helps people gain more control congruence and healing. I find working with people to be deeply rewarding, and I truly care.

I work with people who feel ready to address some kind of dis-ease in their lives, whether that is an anxiety , addiction, relationship question or stress-related physical pain. Many of these issues take time to address properly although people often experience relief relatively quickly. I worked as a teacher before becoming a psychotherapist, and still like the Greek word for teaching: pedagogy, which has at its heart the idea of accompanying. I accompany people in-person and online, on their journey; I rarely offer advice but work with people to help them understand themselves, what they want, and the best way forward for them.

Life can be hard at times; work can be stressful, relationships challenging and circumstances in the past and present can all affect our emotional health. Perhaps you struggle with anxiety or low mood or self esteem, or a life event has knocked you off course. When we're struggling it can be really helpful to speak with someone outside of our family and friends who can gently help you understand the why behind your feelings and behaviour; and offer the hope of change.

Counselling can help with a variety of issues, some of the areas I work with are: anxiety , depression, stress management, bereavement, long term illness, relationship issues, spirituality and loss/change of identity.
I offer a non-judgemental, safe environment to help you understand yourself and your life. Counselling can support you to find your own insights, new ways of being with yourself and others, and work towards healing and freedom. It can be a space to get things off your chest, rest or reset, find perspective and understanding in life and relationships, as well as having someone to really hear and be with you as you share and explore what is difficult. My practice is informed by Buddhist philosophy and meditation, which I have been exploring and supporting others with for over 15 years, emphasising embodied awareness and compassion.

All emotions have a place; anxiety , anger, grief and confusion, please bring them.
You may seem to the world to be successful, sure of yourself, and in control whilst feeling increasingly isolated as you battle, perhaps in secret, with your fear, anxiety , loneliness or past. You may sense that part of you is hidden, maybe even from yourself, tripping you up when it matters most, that your life is not quite what you hoped or your choices are unfulfilling. You may wish to know your own heart, to be on your own side, and to be able engage authentically and meaningfully with your life. Working together we can listen out for your quiet inner voice, the one that already knows you and already knows how to be.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
