Are you tired of the impact anxiety and/or depression has on your life?
Sessions feel welcoming, validating and free to talk without judgement. I understand how as an adult/parent we can become ‘stuck’ in unhelpful patterns of behaviours and talking about them in sessions can feel exposing and raw. I offer parent sessions to deep dive into issues at home and school. I also write to schools/college/work/etc with recommendations.

I help clients with their personal problems, including addiction, anxiety, bereavement, depression, family issues, loss, low self-esteem, stress and trauma.
I am an integrative counsellor and psychotherapist, which means I believe there is no "one size fits all" approach to client work. Each person's background and reasons for seeking therapeutic support are different, and so I offer a range of interventions, where required, to meet each clients' needs.

Do you get an anxious knot in your stomach on Sunday, thinking about the week ahead?
Counselling gives you the space to work out what you need from your life. It supports developing resilience so that you can surf the waves of life rather than feel you are going under. It helps you work with, not against, yourself. So that you can enjoy your own life now, rather than somebody else's idea of how it should be.

I believe every individual has deep inherent dignity and that people are worth caring for. Yet we live in a world where we will suffer, some of us in deep and profound ways. I meet with many clients who have complex trauma or are working through challenges related to family or church hurt. They all desire to experience life differently, to heal and be renewed. Many of my clients also desire to work with a counsellor who has a Christian perspective and can offer insights on difficulties with Christian community.

Sometimes it’s hard to know where to turn, life can feel very overwhelming and exhausting. It can be lots of wee things or a big life change and sometimes we just can’t put our finger on it. What we do know is that we’ve had enough, we want to enjoy life and relationships and bring more lightness and laughter into the everyday. Maybe work is getting us down or family and relationships. How good would it be to feel more at ease? In therapy we can explore together to find a way through the fog.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
