I have 20+ years experience working with a broad range of Trauma ( PTSD/CPTSD/Childhood Development) presentations and therefore Compulsivity/Addiction issues as well as anxiety and depression.
Ultimately, good therapy should make change: reactions, behaviours, difficult aspects of self, attitudes/beliefs about yourself or how you carry your story. I love work to with clients who are prepared to jump in, take risks and be proactive - this is the way to ensure real change. I jump in too, working with body and mind in a practical, energetic way. I view the best wisdom as something that can directly be applied to life. A supervisee described me as "real, relational, practical and not floaty/wispy". I like to incorporate psychoeducation and relevant theoretical information. I don't sit on my hands or allow unhelpful silences.

Maybe the reason you are here today is because you are experiencing feelings that you would rather not continue to carry alone. My practice is called ‘Accanto’ and I have built my service around this name, which translated means ‘next to or beside,’ and quite simply that is exactly where I will be for you. I do have an A-Z of what I cover but actually this is about YOU feeling that you can bring anything you need into the space that I offer. Counselling is initially about feeling better about all the different parts of yourself, learning to love your whole self so that you can then invite love and acceptance from others.

I have extensive experience of working with people who have experienced trauma.
I am an HCPC registered Clinical Psychologist who has worked in mental health services for over 15 years. My expertise lies in helping people to find a path to achieving lasting change. I often work with people who feel very stuck. They may have tried many approaches to achieving lasting change, but found themselves slipping into old patterns of behaviour after a time. I offer an evidence based approach, together we will use a series of assessment sessions to develop a mutual understanding of your difficulties, and develop a plan to move forward.

Trauma responses, OCD, a phobia or social anxiety might be getting the better of you, or you may have no one to talk to in confidence.
I do have a lot of experience working with trauma, particularly within relationships, from childhood and in the workplace. I am very sensitive to the different ways you are surviving everyday and how this plays out in your life, plans and relationships so I do work gently but with an agreed focus. I like to know what has worked or not for you before.

Are you in a role where pressure or exposure to trauma is just ‘part of the job’?
I work primarily with professionals in demanding environments experiencing cumulative stress, trauma exposure or burnout. I have experience working within the NHS and emergency services, so I understand the culture of responsibility, high standards and quiet endurance that makes asking for support feel impossible.

I mainly work with clients struggling with anxiety, depression, PTSD or long-term health issues.
Using body psychotherapy (somatic psychotherapy), I will work with you on all levels of your being (mind, body and spirit) in a transparent, caring and empowering way. My focus is on supporting you to achieve the life changes you need to become truly happy, and on creating maximum value for you going forward (so that you can experience deep and lasting change). In my approach, I work by listening deeply to your life force and holding the space for your process to emerge, your inner child to be heard and all of your feelings and thoughts to be welcomed.

How do you choose a therapist? Experience and training are important: I've been practising for over 28 years and completed 3 distinct degree level qualifications; psychotherapy, CBT and mindfulness (Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy)'. Also EMDR. Text to discuss which therapy is right for you. Sessions will gently enquire of emotion, regulation, body sense, behaviours in difficult situations, gradually facilitating self awareness and awareness of situations. Exploring brings understanding. This will involve direction from me in this. Professional bodies: UKCP for psychotherapy and psychotherapeutic counselling BABCP for CBT.

As a BACP-registered, trauma-informed counsellor, I offer a safe and confidential space where you can talk openly at your own pace.
Hello and welcome. You might be feeling overwhelmed, anxious or stuck in patterns that don’t seem to change. Perhaps you’re tired of holding everything together for everyone else or past experiences still feel closer than you’d like. Many of the people I work with want to feel calmer, more confident and less critical of themselves. In our sessions, we move at your pace. I offer a warm, supportive space where you can talk openly, make sense of what’s weighing on you and begin to feel more grounded and self-compassionate. You don’t have to figure it out alone.

Are you feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or stuck in patterns you can’t seem to shift no matter how much you try to think your way through them? Understanding can help, but it doesn’t always change how things feel day to day. You may have already tried to work things through on your own, but still feel stuck. In our work, we look at the patterns behind how you feel. Not just why they’re there, but how they continue to affect you. Talking therapy can help you explore and make sense of your experience. I also draw on CBT and EMDR, which work more directly with patterns, behaviours, and past experiences.

I specialise in working with trauma, something we have all experienced to some degree.
I have a First class BA (Hons) in Integrative counselling which I am able to combine with my knowledge of physiology and anatomy and my understanding of a variety of therapies to create a way forward that encompasses both mind and body, as I believe that neither can exist or be helped in isolation from the other.

My approach can address a range of mental and physical health problems including depression, panic attacks, low self esteem, trauma, with a particular focus on helping clients to regulate anxiety.
I provide a range of evidence based psychotherapies to alleviate psychological distress in Devon, my main approach being Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP). Intensive Short term Dynamic Psychotherapy is a highly effective form of psychodynamic psychotherapy designed to help you get to the heart of the matter quickly, and resolve issues fast. The approach is emotion focussed; a relational therapy that can address a wide range of ongoing problems or symptoms. ISTDP is particularly useful in attending to internal conflicts that can arise from interpersonal relationships.

Trauma and PTSD Counsellors
When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
