You may feel weighed down by trauma, grief, anxiety, or the impact of painful experiences that feel too heavy to carry alone. Perhaps you’re a survivor of abuse or violence, living with chronic illness, or struggling with relationships and self-worth. You may long for relief, understanding, and a supportive space where every part of you is accepted. Maybe you want to make sense of your story, process difficult memories, or discover new ways of coping. Together, we can explore your experiences, honour your strengths, and move toward clarity, resilience, renewed hope, and meaningful new possibilities for the future.

Ultimately, good therapy should make change: reactions, behaviours, difficult aspects of self, attitudes/beliefs about yourself or how you carry your story. I love work to with clients who are prepared to jump in, take risks and be proactive - this is the way to ensure real change. I jump in too, working with body and mind in a practical, energetic way. I view the best wisdom as something that can directly be applied to life. A supervisee described me as "real, relational, practical and not floaty/wispy". I like to incorporate psychoeducation and relevant theoretical information. I don't sit on my hands or allow unhelpful silences.

I have worked with many clients with varying degrees of personal difficulties; severe and mild distress including depression, anxiety, suicide, low-self-esteem, earlier life trauma, PTSD, relational difficulties and many more.
I offer a safe space for my clients to explore their difficulties without fear of judgement. I am compassionate, supportive and gentle challenging psychologist. My experience has come from working as a psychotherapist in NHS mental health services. I work in an integrative way and I use diagnostic labels cautiously to avoid medicalising notions of distress.

Hello, I’m Jo — thank you for taking the time to visit my profile. Deciding to reach out for support can feel like a daunting step, but it's also an incredibly important one, and I’m glad you’re considering it. Finding a space where you feel safe, understood, and supported is essential when it comes to therapy. I work to provide exactly that — whether it’s in-person, over the phone, or via video — so you can access support in the way that feels right for you. I’m trained in a range of counselling approaches, which means we can shape the therapy around your individual needs, rather than trying to fit you into a one-size-fits-all mod

In my approach to psychological therapy, I will work with you to first understand your struggles and to recognise how well-trodden paths often keep us stuck, repeating the pains of the past. Finding the words, and feeling the unconscious, together we can navigate our way to new grounds and start to pave a way to more hopeful, rewarding and empowering futures. I use a number of tools to help you grow and eventually unearth the healing within your heart. At times, we will simply talk, at other times, we will draw out maps to help us find our way through the fog, and beyond this, we will learn through new exercises and experiences.

Suicidal Ideation Counsellors
How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?
Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioural therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?
The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
