Sometimes the issues we face paralyse us with anxieties. Sometimes we have no one in our lives who are able to help or we may not want to burden others. It’s difficult to trust people with our innermost worries, feelings and thoughts. Yet we all need help to get through difficult periods in our lives. It may be that friends and family tell us to stop dwelling on the past or try and move on. But no matter how hard we try, the past hangs around to haunt us or we have no words to describe what we feel. Additionally, we may wish to explore our experience for personal or professional reasons.

I am an Adult Autism specialist and work with problems including burnout, depression, anxiety and low self-esteem. I am particularly interested in supporting adults who find they are struggling to come to terms with what it means to be autistic. Unfortunately, many autistic adults report poor experiences of therapy. I have a particular interest in supporting adults who are struggling to make sense of what it means to be autistic, and clients tell me that the support I offer feels very different from what they have experienced elsewhere. I don’t expect my clients to change anything about themselves, especially not on my behalf.

Does it feel like you’re juggling everything for everyone, while your own needs have slipped to the bottom of the list? Perhaps a quiet but persistent anxiety has become your constant companion, or a harsh inner critic dictates your thoughts, leaving you feeling stuck and disconnected from the person you want to be. You know something needs to change, but the path forward seems unclear, and finding the time and space for yourself feels like just another impossible task on your to-do list.

I'm Jay, a practitioner who celebrates authenticity, creativity and individuality. Starting therapy can be overwhelming, especially when life asks so much of us. My goal is to create the very space that you are seeking, where you are genuinely seen, understood and held. As a late diagnosed AuDHD individual, I am well aware of the struggles we face on a daily. Masking, people pleasing, anxiety, anger and frustration towards the world, overwhelm from the demands of life, feeling othered and shamed from the messages we too often receive.

You might be feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or weighed down by the past. Maybe you're having nightmares or flashbacks and feeling hyper-alert to danger. You want to feel more in control, build confidence, and find ways to move forward, but you’re not sure where to start. Therapy can help.

You may be feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, weighed down by grief, or stuck in a perpetuating cycle of low mood and stress. You may be a parent worried about your child's emotional well-being, or a young person navigating school pressures, trying to make sense of friendships or transitioning to big life changes. Deep down you may long for relief to be able to feel more like yourself, to feel grounded again, to renew hope inside of you to be able to move forward in life instead of it dragging you down. You just need someone to be able to listen to you and walk alongside you, who truly understands how you feel.

I know reaching out for counselling can feel like a big step. Maybe you’re here because you want to feel more confident in yourself, to quiet that inner critic, or to reconnect with a sense of self-compassion that’s been missing for a while. Maybe you’re noticing patterns in your relationships that you’d like to understand and change. Or perhaps you can’t quite put your finger on it — you just know something inside you is asking for care, for space, for something to shift.

Hi, I am a Person-Centered counsellor and clinical supervisor based in South Manchester. I believe the first step to therapy can be the most difficult yet courageous. There are times when we need some space to talk about and process what we are feeling and explore life issues. Allowing yourself permission to reach out and talk to someone can be half the battle. Being Person-centred trained I focus on building a good therapeutic relationship with you by creating a space of empathy, congruence and openness, whilst working with you to cultivate self-compassion and make conscious choices as a way to be more true to yourself.

Life can feel overwhelming at times and the counselling service I offer aims to give you a safe and secure environment to unpack your feelings. I know it can be difficult to begin to talk about emotional topics and sometimes it helps to talk to someone outside of your immediate support network in a space without judgement. You can reach out even if you’ve never been able to speak to anyone about how you are feeling before or if you aren’t sure if your problems are complex enough for therapy. I work within a person-centred approach, allowing you to lead with the issues you would like to bring to sessions

Maybe you’re holding it together on the outside, but inside it feels like too much. It might be anxiety, depression, past trauma, ADHD, or patterns in relationships or with self-worth that feel hard to shift. You don’t need to explain it all perfectly, just somewhere to start. I’m a BACP-registered therapist offering a person-centred, trauma-informed space to go at your pace. You’ll be met with empathy, honesty, and respect. People often come to me feeling stuck, emotionally exhausted, or unsure where to begin. Over time, you can start to feel more settled, more like yourself again, and like things are a little easier to face.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
