I imagine you are here because something in your life is troubling you, holding you back and preventing you from feeling secure, happy and fulfilled. Please be reassured that it is perfectly normal at certain points in our life to face difficulties that can leave us feeling distressed, out of control and overwhelmed, resulting in us suffering mentally, emotionally and physically. My name is Eva and I am an integrative, person-centred counsellor with an Honors in Psychology and a Master of Science in Counselling. I am, like you, a person, who knows both joy and pain. I also know hope, and you being here shows that you do, too. I believe our lives are a culmination of experience metabolized – what we experience is internalised, processed, and the results are expressed through our thoughts, feelings, and behavior. I believe those inner monologues can be accessed through introspection. I work to facilitate and empower you in questioning those stories and rewriting alternative, desired future chapters.

I'm passionate about helping people to resolve their problems and achieve their goals. This is therapy not simply to understand yourself, manage your emotions or control your behaviour but, rather, to overcome therapeutic problems permanently by identifying the biographical origins and 'relearning' the experience. The main approach used, Relearning Experience Process, is a brief, solution-focused therapy requiring only a few consultations to achieve complete resolution. I have 25 years experience helping people overcome OCD, PTSD, childhood abuse, depression, social anxiety , lack of confidence or assertiveness and need for approval.

Sometimes we reach a point in our life where feelings of anxiety or depression take over. Together we can explore what brought you to this point in a caring, non-judgmental and welcoming environment. We will look for any patterns or early decisions made in childhood and work towards making new ones that work better for you. I have found that the journey of psychotherapy is a challenging but very rewarding journey of self-exploration, self-awareness and self-acceptance.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
