Is your child having issues at school and at home? School life can be stressful for young people today and even a bright student can struggle at some point in their school career. Slipping grades and behavioral issues may be indicators that your child is facing some social and emotional challenges. Some of these outward and internal personal struggles are a normal part of growing up, especially during adolescence. Sometimes children need some strategies to cope and build self confidence, and an impartial listener who is neither a parent or a teacher!

Starting counselling can feel A LOT. You may be feeling anxious, overwhelmed, stuck or disconnected from yourself, struggling with confidence, relationships, difficult emotions or changes in your life. Perhaps you appear to be coping while feeling very differently underneath. You may overthink, put others’ needs before your own, or feel unsure of where to turn.
Counselling can give you the space to slow down, make sense of what you’re experiencing and begin to understand yourself more clearly.

Having worked with adults across a range of issues, my practice is now focussed towards couples and individuals struggling with relationship issues.
My aim is to support couples to create positive, alive, joyful relationships which will not only enhance their own lives, but also provide a secure and loving foundation for any children. Usually this means couples come together, but sometimes I work with individuals who recognise the need to address the way they relate to others and want to bring about change in this area of their lives.

Starting a counselling journey can feel daunting, particularly if it is something you haven't experienced before. But counselling doesn't have to begin because something is wrong; it can be what you need it to be. It can be a space to explore how you relate to yourself and others, understand patterns in relationships or behaviour, process what is happening in your life, or simply spend some concentrated time on you. Together we can explore what feels important and develop a greater understanding of yourself, your experiences and what you need.

You may not know exactly what's wrong or have the words - just that something feels different. You may be feeling more anxious or overwhelmed, your confidence has changed, you're coping with bereavement, loss or change (personally, study or work related), finding relationships difficult, or simply feeling that you’re not quite yourself. You may be navigating a new life transition (including perimenopause) - moving into a new decade in your life story. You don’t need to know exactly what’s wrong or what you need from counselling before getting in touch. Sometimes, simply knowing you’d like things to feel different is enough.

FAQ - Therapist Gender
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether your therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
What are the advantages of seeing a female therapist?
Many people - not just women - prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. Women who see a female therapist may also feel freer to discuss challenges that are closely tied to gender, such as life transitions including motherhood or menopause. Some clients who instinctively feel more comfortable disclosing to women may find it easier to broach sensitive subjects with a female therapist. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.
Is therapy different for men and women?
Therapy can be different for men and women insofar as gender plays a role in the challenges an individual faces and the events in life an individual has experienced. Women often face different expectations from their families, friends, and society than men do. In some cases, women might feel most comfortable expressing themselves differently from how men do. Talking about one's feelings and emotions is a critical part of most therapies, and some women might find it comes more naturally when talking to a female therapist. Ultimately, though, therapeutic treatment should be tailored to the individual's specific needs.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I enquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK - even encouraged! - to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
