I offer short-term counselling, where we can work through more immediate and specific problems and longer-term psychotherapy for more intricate and deeper exploration. Whatever you have experienced, my aim is to help you move forward and benefit from the way you want to live your life. I understand how the impact of trauma on our lives creates a block in how we think and behave; where our past can overshadow or impede our view of our present life. With grief & loss, I recognise the parallel process of coping with our daily lives whilst managing a roller coaster of emotions and feelings that is both challenging and exhausting.

A very warm welcome. You may be considering some professional support to help you with life's challenges. I know life can be tough at times for a variety of reasons, and we can find ourselves feeling out of control and under pressure, leaving us struggling and feeling lost, not knowing who to turn to for help and support. It may help you to share your thoughts and feelings, and in doing so you will be positioning yourself in the direction of potential growth, healing and change, which can help you manage your challenges and day to day life.

Sometimes it feels like everyone says that men have it easy. If that’s so, then why are three quarters of all suicides men? We've been taught to tough it out and to go it alone, and that it’s weak to ask for help when things get on top of us – even if there is someone we can turn to. I work with the issues around the difficulty of being male in a society that creates unrealistic and often contradictory ideals of masculinity that are impossible to live up to, and stops men connecting meaningfully with themselves and others.

Life can be tough at times, can make us feel undervalued, overwhelmed and maybe quite a lonely place to be. Therapy can help us understand ourselves a little better, value our uniqueness that makes us who we are. I strive to support that self awakening, to focus on rediscovery rather than changing who you are. I am passionate about ensuring neuro-divergent people can access therapy and adapt my ways of working to meet their needs. I ensure I complete regular CPD and have additional qualifications in Trauma focused CBT, Theraplay Level 1, Triple P Parenting course and trauma training via PODS specializing in DID.

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Counsellors
How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?
Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like cognitive behavioural therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behaviour therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.
Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.
Are there specific medications for dissociation?
There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom which may include antipsychotics, antidepressants, or anti-anxiety drugs.
How often and how long are therapy sessions?
Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
