I offer individual and couples counselling and have recently completed EMDR training.
Welcome, my name is Julia and thank you for taking the time to drop by to learn a little more about me and how I may be able to help you to feel better about your life. It has been my experience that navigating our way through our lives is not always plain sailing and at times we may turn to unhelpful and self-destructive ways to see us through. Whether it is alcohol, drugs, shopping, surgery or unhealthy relationships we are trying to cope with deep unhappiness in the best way we can and as we get older those feelings and addictive behaviour can often get stronger and take us to dark places.

I have 16 years experience working with a range of issues including abandonment, addiction, anxiety, bereavement, depression, complex trauma, PTSD, relationship problems, and victims/perpetrators of abuse.
As a person-centred psychotherapist I believe that our deepest yearnings are to grow and to form nurturing relationships. However, life is hard, and these natural tendencies can become compromised or inhibited through difficult experiences. We can even lose sight of them altogether. When this happens we can feel lost and estranged from who we really are.

My couples' counselling helps to encourage an ability to reach out during times of distress and hurt.
We all feel stuck sometimes; either in life generally or in our relationships. We increasingly hear of people struggling with low self esteem, low mood and motivation, anxiety and depression diagnoses are becoming more common. We hear of relationships falling apart for a myriad of reasons; money, trust issues, infidelity, loss of connection to name a few. The key factor that causes relationships to break down is the failure to communicate effectively and re-connect before the problems arise.

I work with a wide range of problems such as Depression, Anxiety, Low Self-Esteem, Sadness, Loss, Relationship Issues, BPD, OCD, Anger, Feeling Lost, Domestic Violence, Trauma, Sexual Violence & Abuse etc.
I do not believe that people have issues, I believe that they experience issues in relating to their world. Through our work together, I will assist you in exploring the patterns that you follow in your life. This exploration will seek to see where the psychological distress may form and work together to find new ways of being that can relieve this.

With over 18 years experience, I work with adults, young people and couples.
I offer short-term counselling, where we can work through more immediate and specific problems and longer-term psychotherapy for more intricate and deeper exploration. Whatever you have experienced, my aim is to help you move forward and benefit from the way you want to live your life. I understand how the impact of trauma on our lives creates a block in how we think and behave; where our past can overshadow or impede our view of our present life. With grief & loss, I recognise the parallel process of coping with our daily lives whilst managing a roller coaster of emotions and feelings that is both challenging and exhausting.

Couples Counselling

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
