I am passionate about working with parents and carers who want to understand the needs of their child, particularly where they might have concerns about their child's development e.g. learning or social skills. Many parents that I work with find that their child is struggling to regulate emotions, which can be shown through behavioural distress. This can have a significant impact on families, and parents may be unsure how to adapt their response. Often, parents have tried the approaches that they are familiar with, which might have worked for siblings, but don't seem to have the same effect for their child with additional needs.

Life can be overwhelming, and whether you're navigating anxiety, depression, ADHD, ASD, relationship challenges, or a journey of self-discovery, you don’t have to do it alone. My approach to therapy is direct yet warm, grounded in authenticity, humour, and deep respect for your unique experience. As someone whose own path of self-discovery led me to become a therapist, I believe that understanding our patterns—our thoughts, behaviours, and the generational influences that shape us—can help build resilience and create meaningful change.

My trauma-informed therapy approach is integrative, drawing on Person-Centred Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Attachment-based work, and Compassion-Focused Therapy.
Do you ever find yourself crying or feeling stressed over something that seems like a “small thing”? And instead of focusing on how you feel, you start questioning yourself: “Is this even big enough?” or believe “Others have it worse.” And before you know it, you’re comparing yourself to others and feeling like you should be coping better. There’s a saying - if someone drowns in the ocean and someone else in a pond, they’re both still drowning. What you’re feeling matters because it’s your experience, and often there’s a deeper reason behind it.

Welcome, my name is Julia and thank you for taking the time to drop by to learn a little more about me and how I may be able to help you to feel better about your life. It has been my experience that navigating our way through our lives is not always plain sailing and at times we may turn to unhelpful and self-destructive ways to see us through. Whether it is alcohol, drugs, shopping, surgery or unhealthy relationships we are trying to cope with deep unhappiness in the best way we can and as we get older those feelings and addictive behaviour can often get stronger and take us to dark places.

Do you struggle with managing your emotions, feeling overwhelmed by intense emotions, or shut down and disconnected? Have you been told you’re too sensitive? You might feel things deeply, be affected by others’ moods, or feel ashamed of how you respond emotionally. You may wonder whether you'll ever feel truly worthy or confident. These difficulties can affect your daily life and relationships, perhaps leading to anxiety, withdrawal or feeling misunderstood. Coping by bottling things up, or ‘just getting on with it’ may have helped, but now you're ready to take the next step towards living fully and forming meaningful relationships.

As a counsellor, I have a longstanding interest in supporting children, young people and adults who are going through difficult times. I will listen and engage with empathy, thereby making easier for you to feel safe as you share your thoughts and experiences.

Hello! Thank you for being here. I'm Amy. I'm 44 and I have my own full-time private practice. Before qualifying as a psychotherapeutic counsellor, I supported the homeless, alongside social care and abuse charities. As a relational therapist, my aim is to provide a warm and real relationship in which I attune to you and your emotional needs. Together we'll cultivate your self-insight, & try to make sense of what's happened to help you move forward. I work from a trauma-aware lens. I am led by you and where you are at this time. There is no pressure because we can work short, mid or long term.

Attachment-based Counsellors
Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?
Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?
Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?
Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioural Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?
Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
