My study of psychology has led me to embrace the theories of transpersonal psychology which honour both human science and human spirituality .
In counselling we talk about psychological, emotional and behavioural problems that you wish to address. These conversations lead to better self-understanding, new ideas and an opportunity to shift perspective, ultimately leading to more contentment in life and more adaptive behaviours. These are therapeutic conversations which can console us or provoke us to change old unhelpful attitudes and behaviours. The work is done at an easy pace with no coercion. You are the expert on your own life and you set the agenda.

EXPLORE ~ EXPERIENCE ~ ENGAGE ~ EMPOWER How we feel can impact on our world significantly. Talking through thoughts and feelings at our own pace can be a helpful way to explore what may lie at the root of pain and difficulty. My endeavour as a PERSON CENTRED NATURE THERAPIST is to work alongside you in finding your way back to a space of balance and wellbeing within. PERSON CENTRED therapy is at the very core of how I work therapeutically and NATURE deepens and inspires that process. Combining these approaches can be a way to explore thoughts and feelings and facilitate healing.

Asking for help can be a monumental decision that requires a lot of courage. Finding the right therapist can be an equally difficult task. A therapeutic relationship needs to feel safe and collaborative, as it can serve as a foundation for healing.

I hope to work with Clients that are ready to do the work needed (to explore their experience of their unique world), to experience a different way of being and trust in the process of person-centred therapy. I feel its important to understand that this can be an empowering but uncomfortable and a painful process, at times. I appreciate clarity in intentions for commencing therapy. My intention is for clients - to become better acquainted with their truest sense of who they are, to develop sustainable independent self-care practices, in support of greater alignment between yourself and your experience of the world.

Hi my name is Karen. Thank you for looking at my profile. I often find that people who seek Counselling and Psychotherapy do so for many reasons that are common to many. You may be wanting a safe and confidential space to speak about a problem causing difficulties. It might be that you feel unable to speak to those closest to you and you need someone outside of your life, someone separate and non judgemental to talk with to help you make sense of things so that you can start to feel better and indeed make some changes. You might not know what help is out there or where to begin, here is a starting point.

Making the decision to be in therapy can be life-changing. It is important to be able to express ourselves in a non-judgmental, safe, open, and confidential environment. I have been working for many years with people who come to me to talk about a variety of issues. All of these conversations highlight people's desire to improve their quality of life, whether by becoming more confident, finding direction or purpose in life, improving relationships, changing unhelpful behaviours, feeling happier, or developing new skills in life.

Clients come to me for many reasons, but it’s usually when they have tried hard on their own to cope with past or present situations and things are not working for them. Maybe they’ve had a horrible event happen to them in the past and now this event is making them feel like they are living through it again. Maybe it’s about loss and grieving and when does it stop hurting? Maybe it’s about feelings of anxiety and how this stops them from doing what they want to do. The idea of counselling is that we build a relationship together to work through these issues in a safe and non-judgmental environment.

The reasons we seek counselling are many and varied. Sometimes there is a sudden loss or trauma, but sometimes there are layers of difficult experiences where one more is too many, and we can become overwhelmed. These may be current events or traumatic experiences from long ago that continue to affect life today. We may begin to distance ourselves from friends and family as we try to make sense of difficult feelings and emotions alone. Perhaps because we don't want to burden others or from unresolved or misplaced feelings of guilt or shame. Reaching out for support can be the hardest first step to healing and positive change.

Many of my clients talk about how counselling allows them to discuss things with someone who is not directly affected, and who will offer a safe place in which to do it. It can provide people the chance to really reflect on how they, themselves are feeling, away from the life and expectations that they experience with others around them. Whatever your reason for reaching out, well done for making this step and I hope that I can be of help :)

Spirituality Counsellors

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviours. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualisation, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
