My approach, grounded in psychoanalytic and relational theory, will explore how early relationships, and what has happened to you in your life, might have impacted your present challenges, or your ability to cope.
It can feel daunting to seek therapy, but it helps to have someone alongside you while you are struggling. I will provide a compassionate space, and we can work together to explore your current difficulties, and to try to understand them better. Therapy can be difficult, but all of your feelings and moods will be met with empathy and curiosity, as meaningful clues to help me understand your experience of living. We will take things at your pace. As we explore your emotions and experiences, and make connections, you might begin to understand more about yourself. If unconscious patterns emerge, new choices can start to be made.

I'm an integrative psychotherapeutic counsellor which means that I am trained in and draw from the three main schools of thought and tailor my approach to you; not applying any particular method but rather meeting you where you are, and going from there. As there is no one set way of being, I believe there is no one set way of working therapeutically with another, so our therapeutic relationship is important. I offer a free 20 minute consultation to look at what brings you to therapy, any queries you may have, and to see how we 'fit' and how you feel about the prospect of beginning sessions with me.

I am trained in systemic and psychoanalytic therapies and have experience working with individuals and families on a wide range of issues including relationship strain, bereavement, depression, anxiety and the long term impacts of trauma and abuse.
There are lots of difficulties that therapy can help with - feeling stuck in low mood or in patterns of upsetting behaviour, losing sleep, finding yourself blocked with work, suffering unwelcome or intrusive thoughts or feeling overwhelmed by worries and anxiety. These signs of distress all have meanings that we can explore in therapy. Developing a good understanding of their significance, connections and origins can help you to find a way to change the things you want to change and to move on from the constraints holding you back in life, work and relationships.

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?
Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviours. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?
Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behaviour is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?
Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?
Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
