Hello, I’m Lotte. I offer a confidential, warm and friendly environment in which you can explore the reasons that bring you to counselling. I work collaboratively with you and encourage curiosity to gain a deeper awareness of how you experience yourself, the world and others. I offer both short-term goal-focussed counselling, or longer term counselling where we can explore things in greater depth. I am a qualified integrative psychotherapeutic counsellor, meaning I bring together different counselling theories and schools of thought and tailor my approach to each person; we agree together how we will work.

The reasons we seek counselling are many and varied. Sometimes there is a sudden loss or trauma, but sometimes there are layers of difficult experiences where one more is too many, and we can become overwhelmed. These may be current events or traumatic experiences from long ago that continue to affect life today. We may begin to distance ourselves from friends and family as we try to make sense of difficult feelings and emotions alone. Perhaps because we don't want to burden others or from unresolved or misplaced feelings of guilt or shame. Reaching out for support can be difficult, but contacting me is easy, please get in touch.

I’m Leah - a gestalt psychotherapist in the advanced stages of training. Gestalt is a humanistic approach to therapy. I work relationally and take a holistic approach that focuses on the whole person. Put simply, I am interested in the relationships you have with others, and the relationship we develop in therapy together. Gestalt is also what's known as a process-based therapy which means we often explore the underlying mechanisms (processes) that drive 'life challenges' for you. I work in a collaborative, holding, empathetic and intuitive way, to help you discover a way forward and gain new perspectives on your life.

I think that there can be a misconception that counselling is there to “fix” people, for me “fix” is not the appropriate word as it can cause people to think there is something wrong with them. I like to think of counselling as a safe non-judgmental space for you to explore what is causing you difficulties at this current time. Counselling is led by you and I can support you through understanding your thoughts and feelings, helping you to process and understand what is happening. I like to think of counselling as a space to help you understand you better, because you are the best tool to help you move forward.

Clients, both men and women, come to me for many reasons, but it’s usually when they have tried hard on their own to cope with past or present situations, and things are just not working for them. Men can be less likely to seek therapy than women, but it’s just as important for men to take care of their mental health too. Therapy can help anyone achieve better mental health, improve relationships and address work issues, such as anxiety and dealing with pressure. Perhaps all that’s needed is a space to talk. With counselling, we can build a relationship together and work through these issues in a safe and non-judgmental environment.

I work with children who may be struggling with self-esteem, emotional regulation, family/ peer relationships, confidence or are not coping at school. They may have experienced trauma which continues to impact their emotional well being and everyday life. Often their parents/carers have tried many different strategies to support their child and are desperate for them to be happy and for their relationships to improve.

I highly value my role as therapist and count myself as privileged to be able to walk alongside people in search of meaning, safety, hope and healing. Whether you're struggling in your relationships, with depression, anxiety, or just feeling stuck in life, therapy can be a resource to offer support, curiosity and new perspectives. It is rewarding for me to witness others discover their own strengths and overcome difficult experiences.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
