I work with relationship issues, identifying difficult dynamics between couples and family members, and ways to resolve them.
I have many years experience working in public and private sectors with a wide range of people. I am trained in a variety of approaches, for instance CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy), Solution-Focused, Mindfulness, Psychosynthesis, Compassion-Focused Therapy for Trauma, and Systemic Therapy for couples and families. My aim is to identify what will make your therapy most worthwhile whether short or longer term, how to reach for desired goals, improve your relationships and build self-esteem and confidence. My PhD is Critical and Creative Writing (UEA, 1997) and I am a published author. Website: lyndamiathompsonwriting.com

A warm hello and thank you for taking a look at my profile. I'm a qualified integrative counsellor, who offers a safe, professional, and caring space where I sit with my clients to explore what hurts. Experiences such as anxiety, loneliness, depression, loss, injury, trauma, abuse, identity, life direction and meaning, family issues and low self-esteem are often painful. They can also be seen as our internal system telling us to take a closer look at what's going on inside.

It is a very different sort of conversation to the ones you might have with friends or family .
People seek therapy for many different reasons. It can be to unblock creativity, or to explore the past. Some people come because they are experiencing difficult or unwanted feelings, such as anxiety or sadness. Some suffer from symptoms such as sleeplessness that are connected to their feelings. Whatever brings you to therapy, the psychoanalytic approaches I offer can deepen your understanding and open new avenues of experience. I do not charge for the initial session, which is a chance for us to get to know one another and see if we can work well together. www.alistaircormacktherapy.com

Are you worried some of your issues will be passed on to your children? Anxiety around family issues does not have to dominate your life. So much of parenting can feel like a "flying by the seat your pants" kind of experience. While this will always be true to some extent, having more supplies on board; can change the journey from one you’re enduring to one you’re enjoying. Counselling can help you become the mum you want to be. Together we could invest time to reflect on your story, supporting you to gain a clearer sense of your priorities and values, helping you and your family to thrive. Now and in the future.

My therapeutic orientation integrates Acceptance and Commitment Therapy with a Psychodynamic approach, structured within a Family Systems framework.
Welcome! I am an American-trained member of the BACP, with 8 years of experience working as a psychotherapist. I have worked with clients struggling with a range of mental health difficulties (chronic and acute: depression, anxiety, stress, trauma), but have specific experience with relationship issues (infidelity, breakups/divorce, struggles to connect); grief, bereavement and loss; and addiction. My style is warm and interactive, but challenging when needed. Being non-judgmental, and treating others with respect, sensitivity, and compassion is the bedrock of counselling, and is built into all of my feedback and reflections.

I like to work with clients who are aware that they want to make changes in their lives: they may not yet know what the change looks like, but are willing to explore options in a compassionate and supportive environment. They are interested to learn more about themselves and others; willing to accept that they many need to let go of some old patterns of thinking, feeling and doing to live the life they want for themselves. They are committed to their personal growth and willing to meet regularly over Zoom or in person, to achieve their goals. Goals will be agreed each session to ensure focus and a sense of achievement for us both

When we experience difficult events in our life, from obvious traumas (e.g., childhood abuse or neglect) to stressful life events (e.g., moving house, relationship break-downs), we do what we have to do to survive. We learn specific ways of being, and develop ideas about ourselves and others that help us to feel safe. This is our brain and nervous system doing the best job it can. However, often these patterns of thinking and behaviour remain long after the danger has passed, and we find that they are no longer serving us.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
