Hello lovely person on the search. It can be a daunting step, asking for help, finding a person you feel you can trust... especially if you feel you 'should be able to cope on your own' or 'there is actually nothing really wrong, I just need to pull myself together'. Those feelings of underlying depression, anxiety, potentially suicidal thoughts, shame, self-loathing and an unrelenting inner critic can quite often be expressions of complex PTSD. C-PTSD is sneaky and one of the symptoms can be that we belittle our sorrows and difficulties ... and that the inner critic prevents us from living more freely and more at peace.

Do you feel trapped in uncertainty, overwhelmed with sadness, emotions or physical pain? Is anxiety holding you back and getting in the way of living well? Do you find it hard to express your own needs. Maybe not wanting to feel a burden, so often keep your worries to yourself. Or overly focussed on others needs, at the detriment of your self-care. Do you find yourself behaving in ways that are unlike a person you want to be, maybe snappy at loved ones or colleagues and critical of yourself? Together, we can create a safe space, to explore helpful ways to move forward, build resilience and live better.

I work with people who are feeling anxious, overwhelmed, wanting help with a particular topic, or sometimes just not feeling quite ‘themselves’. You don’t need to have a plan; just come as you are and we’ll figure out the rest together. My job is to help you make sense of what’s going on, by untangling those thoughts and feelings, to help you start feeling more like yourself. I work as a counsellor and also as a hypnotherapist, because one size doesn’t fit all. Some things need time, space, talking and processing. Others are more deeply rooted and are better helped using an approach that goes beyond logic and into the subconscious

My therapeutic approach is based on the belief that each of us carries within ourselves the wisdom and tools to initiate our own healing process, the therapeutic relationship then becomes a facilitation of a return to self. Through my own journey of recovery and successfully sustaining sobriety I have become a believer in being able to reinvent your life. To address addiction is often very difficult and takes incredible courage. But the gifts of recovery from addiction are tremendous. As your therapist I will quickly identify the causes, conditions and underlying concerns that are causing your pain.

Change can sometimes be hard. Facing changes in our life can bring forth a bombardment of expected and unexpected emotion: anxiety and fear about what will happen next; sadness and anger about the circumstances of the change; guilt and shame about past events. It can feel like a whirlwind of thoughts going around inside your head. Opening the 'box' and letting those thoughts out in a safe, compassionate setting releases the overwhelm, helps you to see more clearly what is right for you and builds confidence in your inner wisdom.

Are you stuck, bewildered, unable to work out what is happening? Do you find that confiding with friends and family isn't necessarily that helpful? It may be time to explore with someone with a different approach what can change. Do you want to move out of a current pattern of thinking or behaving? I work with a solution focus in some sessions when the goal is to move an obstacle that is often our thinking and responding. I can offer an empathic and safe environment to work through life changes and transitions such as loss and grief, divorce or betrayal. I work especially well with shame based thoughts and behaviours.

Are you struggling with substance or alcohol use, trauma and/or despair?
The core of the techniques provided by Cognitive Counselling are a collaborative approach to discovering what is contributing to the difficulties clients are seeking help for and resolving them. One of the most important aspects in being able to create change in ourselves, is the ability to acknowledge what needs to be changed.

Alcohol Use Counsellors

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
