I provide a space where you can truly be yourself; to be seen and heard free of judgement. Therapy provides an opportunity to explore who you are at your core, and how you relate to your unique life experiences and the world around you. The relationship with yourself is the longest you will ever have. At times it can be the most difficult with symptoms of anxiety, depression, grief and loss, trauma, attachment wounds, and life stressors. I work flexibly with your unique strengths and circumstances to help you make progress. There may be specific concerns or more general overall improvements you want to make.

Maybe you feel numb and detached from life and everything seems to be foggy like your watching life through a glass window? Maybe you work so hard not to be low all the time, that it has turned into a full time job with no energy for anything else. To make the decision to access the therapy can be emotional process. The Initial Consultation that I offer is the beginning of exploring the issues and seeing whether you would like to work with me. There are many ways of getting stronger, sometimes taking is the best way.

I am understanding, patient, empathetic, friendly and I have good listening skills. During counselling sessions, I understands my clients’ thoughts and emotions, as well as ongoing issues that they may be having through an integrative approach. This is done by facilitating them to replace negative thoughts with positive thoughts which would in turn help them to feel and act positively. I also help the client to identify their strengths and weaknesses. My aim to build independence, empowerment and self-love in my clients.

I often work with people who are coming to terms with past trauma, or who are unsatisfied with their lives. Perhaps you find yourself repeating the same patterns over and over, or perhaps you struggle to identify and express your feelings. I offer an open minded space to think together and understand what is happening for you, and how you might go about changing things. I am interested in the ways in which our environment affects us, and pay attention to the impact of class, racialisation, disability, migration status, gender, etc. I work with all kinds of people, including lgbtq+ people, and I am trans affirmative.

I am an experienced psychotherapist in private practise, as well as teaching faculty on foundation and advanced counselling courses in Exeter, UK. I firmly believe that we are fundamentally relational beings, ones that need security, understanding & care above all else. Real change comes not from trying to fix thinking patterns, self-concepts or the past, but in shifting relational dynamics in the here and now and finding new ways of being with another. This is what I focus on in therapy with my clients,

Even if everything seems fine from the outside, do you sometimes feel restless, anxious, or exhausted? Sleepless nights, overwhelming emotions, sudden anger, or feeling stuck in unhealthy cycles are often reflections of past experiences showing up in the present. Many of the clients I work with don’t always call what they’ve been through “trauma,” yet they describe feeling its effects every single day. Have you ever stopped at some point in your life and asked yourself, “Do I have to keep going like this?”

I am an Integrative Psychotherapist and Counsellor with a broad range of experience working with young people and adults. The approach I use allows me to move freely between modalities while adapting and bringing together relevant elements according to individual needs and requirements. I believe the essence of my role is the therapeutic relationship between the client and me, developing a trusting relationship within the counselling session is essential. I involve the use of empathy, non-judgment, and authenticity. This alongside confidentiality creates a safe environment for the client and I to work together.

Life can feel uncertain, leaving us carrying the weight of experiences or emotions we haven’t yet understood, such as pain, habits, or memories that keep us stuck. Counselling offers space to make sense of these experiences and move toward steadier ground.

Hello and welcome. My name is Katherine Coates and I am a qualified Person Centred therapist. My journey to become a qualified counsellor started after I entered therapy myself so am well aware of how terrifying taking the first steps in asking for help can be. Therefore, I aim to offer a safe space where you feel accepted and valued enough that you can reveal your vulnerabilities without fear of judgement.

Substance Use Counsellors

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counsellors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
